Publisher's summary

Since booze and prohibition have made criminals out of every man in her world, Laurie Burke resolves to find at least one honorable man to fill her life. Convinced that handsome newcomer Daniel Shepherd is connected with her brother's rum-running gang, Laurie quickly scratches his name off her list. Daniel has mixed feelings about returning to the dirty mill town of his youth, but grudgingly agrees to manage his grandfather's drug store until a replacement can be found. The moment he meets Laurie on the windswept bluff overlooking the beach, he knows that if he can earn her love, he might have a reason to stay. But when Laurie pushes him away - for none other than Federal Agent Samuel Brown - Daniel wonders if Laurie really is the upstanding woman he thought her to be. The Strait of Juan de Fuca, just off the beaches of Port Angeles, Washington, was treacherous water for reckless rum-runners - and the agents who tried to catch them. So when she realizes her brother is in danger, romance is the last thing on Laurie's mind. Yet the people she believes she can trust, may not be so honorable after all.

Captivating Story immersed in history

Captivating story that captures your imagination from the start. Immersed in details of the Pacific Northwest during prohibition. Would make a great TV movie the characters are so real. The narration was really good with the varying pitches and voices. I can't wait to check out more of Karen Barnett's books. Wendy Holley

Like Watching a Movie!

I really enjoyed spending the day in another time and place. There was a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, and a whole lot of great storytelling.
I felt bad for Laurie, being torn between two men, mistakenly thinking one is rumrunner with her brother when he's actually just a pharmacist, and the other a G-man. I didn't trust Samuel from the start, something seemed a bit off with him and his fancy car. Prohibition officers didn't make that much money, did they?
I liked Daniel, though he should have been up-front with Laurie about his past.
Laurie's brother Johnny has his reasons for doing what he's doing, you must read that part for yourself, no spoilers from me.
I highly recommend this book! The audio was a great listen, it often felt like I was watching a movie instead of listening to a book. Karen Barnett does a wonderful job with scenic descriptions and conveying emotions

Was rolling my eyes the whole time

The religious angel was so absurd my eye balls hurt from rolling them, somehow I still finished the story because the reader was decent and the story flowed good enough. If it wasn’t free on audible escape I would have never picked this book but if you are religious and like a light fluffy story you might like it.
