Publisher's Summary

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways, and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better.

Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training, especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince, and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies.

Critic Reviews

"Family betrayal, a power-mad serial killer, and a potential diplomatic crisis threaten the independent-minded heroine of Snyder's fine sequel to Poison Study....Snyder's lively, charming mix of romance and fantasy is sure to gain her new fans." (Publishers Weekly)

Magic Study

I was first introduced to Maria Snyder via "Poison Study", which was so far afield from my normal fare of suspense, mystery and intrigue; but those elements were all there residing in a tale of fantasy.
Then when "Magic Study" became available I was curious to see how it developed. Wow!
I just purchased, "Fire Study" becasuse I am hooked!
Fantasy is not my fare, but these three books have enlarged my audio entertainment vista and I recommend them without hesitation.

As good as Poison Study, perhaps better

Please tell me there is going to be third book in this series. The story is far from finished, and the end of this book is wide open for another whole story. We need to see Yelena in her new career, and I'm dying to see her take her heart's love to meet her family.

As with Poison Study, the first book in the series, I had a hard time getting out of the car at the end of my commute because I wanted to hear more of the story. Maria Snyder has created a set of fully-realized characters and a twisting plot that remains unpredictable all the way to the end. More! I want more!

Loved the sequel

I would highly recommend this book if you like fantasy. This was a great sequel, I think maybe even better then Poison Study, though I might feel that way because I started this book already attached to the characters. I listened to this book every free moment I had. The twists and turns kept me guessing and intrigued. Gabra Zackman was a great narrator. I'm looking forward to the 3rd "Study" book which according to the authors website is due out in 2008.
I would recommend anyone wanting to try this book to get the first book (Poison Study) first because you need the history of the characters to really appreciate Magic Study.

The bad point... wait there isn't one!

I bought Poison Study (first in the series) last year when the trilogy was on sale and am now mad at myself for not buying the whole trilogy at that time. I always have about 10 audiobooks in my library that I haven't listened to yet and I go through them in order of purchase... I listened to Poison Study two weeks ago and instead of going to the next in my list, I bought Magic Study.

And now I still have my 10 unlistened books and am going to go buy Fire Study...

The narrator is fantastic. The story is engaging and unpredictable. You care about the characters and want things to work out for them. It is a fantasy series with a female protagonist written with adults in mind and yet there is no obscenity or graphic sex.

Perfect.

Waiting for third!

Great Sequel. Good blend of fantasy and suspense, with a little bit of romance (not a mushy romance novel, nothing to give you cavities). Great characters. Good, easy, fun book.

Great follow-up!!

4.1/2 stars, great follow-up to this fantastic series, new intrigues, new twist and turns, new bad and good characters, and the romance! aww! even though is not as steamy as I normally like, still very believable, heart-felt and hot and a whole new way.
I truly enjoyed it.
The narration is just superb! Gebra Zackman does a terrific job bringing this books to life with the perfect tone, pace and very accurate interpretation of the characters.

Absorbing story, great reader

This is the best of so-called fantasy fiction: a story that could be happenening here and now but with a twist, similar to Harry Potter. Like Harry, the main character is different from the others, trying to fit in and remain safe while learning to recognize and control her magic powers. The reader presents the characters in a crisp, straightforward way, not relying on fake accents.

I recommend that you read the previous book, "Poison Study" first, for the full background of this story line.

Unexpected and interesting

Sometimes you expect these kinds of stories to fall apart after book one, but this one kept me intrigued. The cruelty and brutality of people may be over exaggerated but that's part of the story's strange charm.
Excited for book 3!

Yelena has vanquished her enemies and is on her way to Sitia to meet the family she doesn’t remember and learn how to control her magic. But growing up in Ixia and being the Commander’s food taster has made her ways strange and suspicious to the people of Sitia. Still, she perseveres. However, soon she is embroiled in a bad situation and must use her newfound abilities, her new friends and the unexpected arrival of old friends to get ahead of the game. And stay alive. Will her life ever be simple?

While not as rousing as the first book, this story has a decent plot with a new world, new enemies, new friends and an appearance of old friends. Everyone still likes Yelena and Valek is still a favorite. Though T said Yelena and Valek having sex all the time is bad. I had to laugh because they aren’t doing it like bunnies. In fact, it’s closed door, not described at all and it’s only a few times. It’s just the fact that when Valek is around they do what couples in love do especially since they’ve been separated for months, but it’s not to the detriment of the plot. LOL Anyway, the magic is fascinating and the Sitia world is interesting. We all loved having the Power Twins back for a bit and the addition of horses is cool. T & K love that the horses call Valek “Ghost.” An apt name indeed. No one likes Yelena’s brother Leif. I agree that he’s an azz though by the end of the book he’s a bit better. T likes Yelena’s dad Esau because he knows so much cool stuff about the jungle. And everyone wants Cahil to die. That would be nice. We’re looking forward to book 3, Fire Study.

Favorite quotes:

“Pushing magic toward the candle, I willed it to light. Nothing happened.
Irys made a strangled sound and the candle burned. “Are you directing your magic to the candle?”
“Yes. Why?”
“You just ordered me to light the candle for you,” Irys said in exasperation. “And I did it.”

“I gave him a bored look. I had been threatened many times before and had learned that the men who didn’t make verbal threats were the most dangerous.”

“Of course, you didn't want our help. Now I have to go beat up some soldier just to keep my ego intact.”
