Publisher's Summary

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways, and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better.

Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training, especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince, and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies.

Magic Study is the sequel to Poison Study and our Editors' Pick for Romance. Find out what else made Audible's Best of 2006 list.

"Should have stayed a Poison Study"

Did not like this book as much as the first in the series Poison Study. This book was filled with fighting scenes which our hero always finds her way out of. She would then meet up with her boyfriend who constatly calls her "love" to the point of irritation; someone tries to kill our hero again, but she escapes at the last possible moment. Repeat sequence until the end of book. Yawn. She should have remained in the castle as a food taster, her life was much more interesting to listen to.

"Not as good as the first book"

There is a theme amongst the other reviewers and I must agree with several of them in that this book was not as good as the first one.

This book seemed to drag on with too much detail on mundane things and a lot of the elements that made Poison Study such an enjoyable read was not present in this book. In the last book, because Yelena was a prisoner in Poison Study, it made sense that she resorted to sly actions and relied on instincts to get her through various circumstances. However, in this book all of her old tactics came across as stupidity and immaturity as opposed to resourcefulness and bravery. She tackled a lot of things blindly and it was sheer luck and convenience that her friends were able to get her out of many a tight-squeeze.

There are more characters introduced in the series and there are also some interesting revelations. These things are what keeps me wanting to finish the series, however I'm not as anxious to get to the end of the trilogy as I was before.

    Narration
    Narrator: Gabra Zackman
    Performance 3/5
    Speed: 1.25x
There was some inconsistency with the accents that Zackman did for each character which, at times, made it hard to know who was talking. Overall her performance was alright in that it wasn't a huge distraction from the tale itself.

    "A whole new magic world."

A good story, Poison Study was better. This book didn't have quite the same feel to it as Poison Study. It almost felt like a different series. Although I liked it I don't know if I will finish the series. Yelena started to drive me nuts, because she thought she knew better no matter the problems. The story left off with no real cliff hangers. Unless it is on sale I think this book will be it for me. Gabra Zackman was awesome as usual.

    "Great follow-up!!"

4.1/2 stars, great follow-up to this fantastic series, new intrigues, new twist and turns, new bad and good characters, and the romance! aww! even though is not as steamy as I normally like, still very believable, heart-felt and hot and a whole new way.
    I truly enjoyed it.
The narration is just superb! Gebra Zackman does a terrific job bringing this books to life with the perfect tone, pace and very accurate interpretation of the characters.

    "Intriguing, but narration lacking"

The first book got me hooked! Although I am disappointed with the sub-par narration, I like the twists and turns of the plot.
In this book, the narrator tends to begin her sentences loud and forceful, and by the end of the sentence she is speaking softly and sweetly. If you are paying attention to that, it will drive you insane! But when it is a conversation between multiple characters, you don't notice this pattern.
I give the book 4 stars, and the narration 2 stars - for an average of 3!

    "Great series, great narrator!"

I listened to all three books straight through and couldn't stop. There is something so pure and honest about the writing -- the characters come alive in a way I've not found in other books of this genre. I hope the author considers adding a fourth novel. Her series rates among my top ten best of all time -- my top 5 in audio books for sure. Loved it!
