Publisher's summary

He promised to never leave me. But when I needed him the most, that was exactly what he did. Wilderness guide Xander Reed has spent fifteen years trying to forget the night he turned to his best friend in his darkest hour, only to find the young man who'd sworn to always have his back was turning his on Xander instead. Two thousand miles and fifteen years of building a new life in the quiet backcountry of the Rocky Mountains should have been enough to put the memory of Bennett Crawford out of his mind forever, but old wounds run deep and when Bennett suddenly reappears in his life as part of a wilderness expedition Xander is guiding, the scars he thought long healed break wide open.

This was a sweet 2nd chance romance. I enjoyed the story line but I'll be honest, It didn't really stand out. The characters were likable with a little childhood baggage but they turned out great anyways. I think I liked that they wanted to help kids who need it the best about this story. The sex was hot and didn't take over the story line.

The narration was 50/50 for me. I enjoyed Michael Pauley's narration but I didn't really enjoy his sex scenes. He is a little over the top just during those scenes with grunting, groaning and panting. It sounded like his was hurting more than enjoying it.

OK

I usually have both kindle and audible versions of a book - just like to have both when i like a book. I'm a sloan kennedy fan - that said Michael Pauley doesn't do it for me - I know he is wildly popular with the LGBT crowd - but for some reason he just doesn't cut it with me - I have several others I like - Sean Crisden, Joel Leslie - Several others - so - unfortunately i can't buy in to the rest of the series as narrated by Michael - the story seems pretty good.

What a great start to a new series

When two of my favorite authors collaborate on a book I know it will be an auto buy for me. Add in that it is a second chance romance and I'm sold. Zander and Bennett were childhood best friends that were separated fifteen years ago. A chance meeting forces them to reevaluate their ideas of what happened all those years ago.

Both Zander and Bennett have much to overcome as they try to reconnect with each other. How to trust themselves and then each other. I loved watching each of them grow into the person they are meant to be. They fought hard to achieve this second chance they were lucky to get.

I was fully invested with this story from page one and didn't put the book down until I reached the end. What a great start to a new series. I eagerly await the next book!

Michael Pauley has such a gift of bringing these characters to life. It was a pleasure listenting to this amazing story.

Unnecessary drama between best friends

I found this book to be quite disappointing. The characters were not developed well and the plot was quite flimsy. The narrator was spot on but that wasn't enough to save the slow paced story.

The main characters Xander and Bennett were best friends growing. An unfortunate event (and miscommunication) led to a 15 year grudge by Xander against Bennett. As the story unfolded, I found it Xander's behaviour immature, bitter and irrational in that he wouldn't even give his best friend an opportunity to explain himself. When the event was finally revealed, I rolled my eyes like nobody's business. It seems like Xander never gave his best friend the benefit of the doubt despite the many things Bennett did to show his love and loyalty. Also, Xander took our his hurt over life's painful lumps on a convenient target, the one person who really had his back. Talk about a bunch of big babies. Xander was a like a big kid for most of the book, and Bennett was the sympathetic friend trying to defend him or make things better. I actually thought Xander was self-centered and ungrateful. It's not Bennett's fault for Xander's family situation but Bennett kept trying to compensate.

Then there was the added new bestie Aiden, whom alternated from being Bennett's protective friend to a jealous ex while trying to mediate between Bennett and Xander. I didn't feel Aiden's character because I wasn't sure what his true motivation was. It felt like he was waiting in the wings to be the clean up man.

The story ended in a reconciliation but since I never felt invested in the relationship, it didn't create that satisfaction I normally get when all ends well. I just felt relieved that these two grown men finally put on their big boy panties and acted like adults.

Benny and Xander

Beautiful captivating story. It’s like peeling a layer every chapter, the emotions this story evokes.

At one point, you’re irritated at Aidan and Benny for seemingly minimizing Xander’s pain. The next thing you know, you’re wanting to hug Benny and heck, even Aidan. Xander’s character is the character I can mostly relate to.

I adore the secondary characters. I’m excited to learn more about them.

Michael always has his unique way of narrating that makes him just so good.

A rating...

My Review:
Overall: 4.5
Performance: 4.75
Story: 4.5

There was tons to love about this story. It's a second chance at love story which is definitely one of my favorite tropes, but I think my favorite thing about this story was the outdoor adventure setting. It worked so well to set up an amazing book. I was riveted the whole time I listened to the audiobook and truly would have been okay if the story had never ended. The visuals and settings were great. The romance and the characters were fantastic. I became immersed in the book and didn't want to come out of it...which is really hard when listening to an audiobook. For some reason people don't like it when you completely shut them out in favor of the fantasy world playing through your earbuds.

I highly recommend this one and cannot wait for book #2. I'm hoping it comes out in audio soon, or else I might have to break down and read the ebook.

This was a different story and I really enjoyed it. The Narrator did an excellent job bringing the story to life. It does make you emotional meaning that you will giggle and cry.
