Publisher's summary

Security Forces Lieutenant Maya Lopez is right at home in a war zone: she's been fighting all her life. A hard-won commission in the air force has brought her to Afghanistan, and if she plays her cards right, she could end up with an FBI job. It won't be easy, but that just makes her more determined.

Jackson Thatcher is a protector in all senses of the word. A pararescue jumper with Southern-boy charm, he easily captures Maya's interest, but her trust is another story. He's sexy, strong and caring, but she makes it clear she's no damsel in distress. She's never relied on any man, and she's not about to start now.

When Maya and Jackson become pawns in a radical warlord's deadly game, they find themselves on the run and must depend on each other if they want to make it out alive.

Don't miss Deadly Descent and Tactical Strike, also by Kaylea Cross.

An Unexpected Surprise

This is a gripping story of three people's survival as POWs and their escape. It is not as heavy on romance as I would expect in the genre but I found myself being sucked into the story. There are some graphic torture scenes that are probably tame when compared to the reality of POWs in our war on terror. Military personal don't get hung up on the regulations, code of conduct or lingo used.

The two very tough airmen Sgt. Jackson Thatcher and Lt. Maya Lopez are made for each other both don't no how to give up in a fight and have strong protective instincts. You can forgive Maya for having to be carried out most of the way because she is the only reason they made it out alive in the first place. You have to love Jackson for wanting to protect his woman even knowing she took out three of their captors alone to rescue him and their VIP. Jackson returns the favor as they make their way to their extraction point battling the enemy every step of the way. By the time they reach safety you sincerely believe that neither could have survived their ordeal without the other and that they belong together.

The author addressed the issue of PTSD and crisis bonding too. She didn't go into detail but you lived the nightmare with them and she gratefully doesn't make you relive it with them. Getting them to embrace their happy ending was tougher than it should have been but understandable as well.

If you are looking for a smoking hot romance this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a gripping story involving two people you want to end up together this is it.

Sadly the narrator didn't do the story justice, managing to make even fire fights sleep inducing if you aren't wide awake. Still over all it was pretty great book.

Not quite four stars

A security forces lieutenant with the air force is in Afghanistan where she meets an attractive pararescue jumper. The author uses the excuse of her tragic childhood for the reason she is strong, determined, and competent. (Why can't a heroine be strong just because it is in her nature to be so?) The best aspects of this story are not around the romance, but rather, concerning the tragedy of war. Some satisfying action. Warning - there is a significant portion of the plot involving torture, which might be tough for some to hear. The love story is also satisfying, but not unique.

I am not certain whether the writing is a bit choppy or if it seemed as though it was because the performance is poor. Inconsistent accents, stiff reading, and monotones were distracting - very inexperienced reader.

Overall, not a waste, but reader is disappointing.

I dont get it

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure I know who would enjoy this book.

What was most disappointing about Kaylea Cross’s story?

There was not a plot to the book. It went from Maya jumping his bones to being torture. I'm not sure how it all connected

How did the narrator detract from the book?

This was the worse narrator. He read slow with no emotion.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I forced myself to finish it.

Any additional comments?

Good book if you want a nap
