Publisher's summary

From USA Today best-selling author Katie Reus, a sexy romantic suspense novella....

Journalist Eve Newman stumbles across the murder of a prominent member of her west Texas town and finds herself the target of a shadowy killer. When the body goes missing and the police don’t believe she saw it happen, she turns to the only man in town she can trust: her deceased brother’s best friend.

Former Marine Macklin Quinn has been half in love with Eve since they were kids, but he’s always considered her off-limits. When she turns to him for help he can’t send her away. Within 24 hours it’s clear she’s in trouble and someone wants her dead. Mac will do everything in his power to keep the feisty journalist alive and help her bring down the killer. And if they can stay alive long enough, he’ll do whatever it takes to convince her they’re meant to be together.

I didn't see that coming !!!!

Absolutely loved this action packed, romantic, mystery with suspense to boot story and a who did it? but a Oh I didn't see that coming. Eve is a reporter which keeps putting herself in danger. Enter Mac who is always there if she needs him but this time he needs her too in more ways than one. Eve is as much an Alpha as is Mac so this couple gives us all the thrills and also show us their emotions. The narrator does a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life.

Another winner by this talented author

Writing short novels requires a great deal of talent, since the author has to pack a lot in just a few pages. Something few manage to do successfully. But as always , Ms Reus outshines as a storyteller by giving the reader an engaging plot with complex characters .
This one centers around journalist Eve Newman, and former Marine and rancher, Mac Quinn. They both have been secretly attracted to each other since their youth, neither telling the other one. When Eve finds herself in a bind, she goes to Mac for help and protection.
The story is full of suspense, whodunit, and of course romance. I love that the author manages to give us a strong woman and an alpha male that can handle her.
Another winner by this talented author.
The narrator , Jeffrey Kafer, does a great job with the voices.

Wonderful narration and exciting story

Audio-book: Narrator – Jeffrey Kafer

Wow! This narrator did an amazing job! I struggle sometimes with a male narrator doing a female voice but not so with this one. Both characters exploded into life through his narration and I fell in love with both Eve and Mack, experiencing all their highs and lows as Mr. Kafer gave them each such depth of emotion.

Eve Newman is in the wrong place at the wrong time. When she is unable to trust anyone with what she has witnessed, and terrified that she is being hunted, she turns to Macklin Quinn, an ex-marine turned rancher. They grew up together and things between them are a bit strained but she knows she can rely on him to help her out.

Mack has it bad for Eve but he hasn’t made a move on her since his return to their small town. She’s a feisty little bit but when she shows up in a world of trouble he doesn’t hesitate to step in. What he doesn’t expect is how extreme the danger to her is and what steps he’ll take to keep her safe. If she’ll let him.

I loved this couple so much! Mack is the perfect alpha, possessive, protective hero while Eve, a strong heroine in her own right, is still able to admit when she is afraid and in need of him. Together they made my Kindle sing! The steam between these two was off the charts and the danger felt real and authentic.

This is a fast read with a great foundation and secondary characters necessary to the story. The conclusion was believable, maybe a tad predictable at one point, but so satisfying. It is full of action and thrills as this couple race to find the villain before anything “else” happens to Eve. I loved every moment of it!

Action Packed!!

Hot cover and a great choice for the story!

I listened to the audiobook and narrator Jeffrey Kafer has one of those deep voices that I enjoy listening too too. You would think it would be hard to listen to him narrate the female lead voice but it really isn't. I don't know how to even describe how such a deep voice can read a female part successfully, but he does it. I am able to completely immerse into the story as he reads and I know exactly what character is talking.

The story itself was just as enjoyable. This is a romantic suspense that involves a heroine as a reporter who uncovers a murder and puts her life in danger. The first person she thinks to go to is Mac. Mac is a former Marine and the perfect person to run to for protection.

Killer Secrets is a pretty short read/listen, but full of impact. The pace was spot on. Despite the shorter story, I felt like I got a full picture of who Eve and Mac are as people. Because of these two knowing each other since they were kids, their relationship didn't feel rushed or forced. I enjoyed this very much. ARC provided by author.

Fast paced romantic suspense

Journalist Eve was following up on an anonymous tip when she walked in on a murder...then the body went missing and someone is after her. Eve seeks refuge with rancher, and her brother’s best friend, Mac. As Mac works to help Eve solve the mystery, and keep her safe, the duo explore their mutual attraction. Is an HEA in the future for Mac and Eve or will the bad guys win?

Action-packed short read

Fast paced romantic suspense with lots of action and romantic moments. Eve and Mack have been "friends" for most of their times but it takes Eve's life to be in danger for Mack to make a move. For such a short read this one packed a punch. The villain was definitely not who I expected. Good story to pass the time.

More like Silly Secrets

No real backstories, no real conflict and no real sleuthing. Why is Eve off-limits? Why are they fighting their insta-lust? Why do the bad guys reveal themselves when Eve never puts together any clues?
This plays like an 80s TV episode.

But, bought on sale, it’s short enough to deliver an okay mystery romance and a single quickie
(at ch10, just before 2 hr mark). Come to think of it, “single” also describes this author’s go-to move…
as in “he entered her in a single thrust.”

Kafer is fantastic delivering growly, smexy alpha male voices and does well enough for the female voices, even if they tend to blend. Compared to other genres, I prefer my romances on the shorter end.
However, it seems I need more than just a bare bones novella to get invested.

I preferred the first few books in C Haber’s Titan Series for mystery romance with military alpha males (later books give diminishing returns). Haber’s books have better stories, dialogue, and get togethers. Bonus: Kafer’s narration brings the heat.
Bonus, bonus: you can get the first five books for one credit in an omnibus.
