Publisher's Summary

Breakups. Family secrets. Stumbling toward independence.

A riveting and humorous exploration of love, secrets, and sisterhood, It's Not My Favorite is the poignant story of two sisters who discover they must confront their past, let go of their religious guilt, and summon everything in their power to escape their arrested development.

Gwenn Hutchinson runs The Organizer by day and bails her little sister out of emotional quicksand by night. Between that distraction and the full-time job of creating a vivid fantasy life for herself, she can almost drown out her mother's post-divorce ranting, "I've always had a man to take care of me, Gwendolyn. You're not gettin' any younger, you know."

Rachel Hutchinson bakes away her anxiety while avoiding a painful breakup with her secret girlfriend. The only people who don't know this "girlfriend" secret are her judgmental parents, Pastor Ed and Shirley.

Just when it seems things can't get worse, Gwenn finds a pack of old photographs that may uncover a family secret. Will these pictures lead to the truth, or bring them face-to-face with the reality they've worked so hard to avoid?

It's Not My Favorite is the first book in the hilarious, fast-paced, romantic comedy, The Lake Effect Series, full of snappy dialogue and memorable, quirky characters, guaranteed to win a spot in your heart.

Buy this audiobook and listen to the Hutchinson sisters as they struggle to embrace adulthood!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Sure it was...any book it worth giving a listen to.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have evened out the 2 girls storylines...I think Rachel's story line would've been a lot more interesting

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

    I didn't love it but I didn't hate it.

I was given a copy of this book from the Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.

When I first started it I was a bit thrown off by the narrator. She just seemed a little weird to me. And if you know me, you know I listen to a few audiobooks a week. I'm an addict. But something just didn't click for me at first. After finishing the book I realized the narrator was the author, which isn't a bad thing. But it wasn't until the story picked up for me that I was able to get more into the narration. Had I not specifically signed up to review the audiobook I'd have just switched over to the ebook edition.

I think it was about 30% in when I started feeling more comfortable with Rue as a narrator. By that point I was pretty much sucked into the story and I did not sleep that night because I had to finish this book. Although I do have to admit I was disappointed because I expected this to be more a lesbian romance. Although there is some of that in here, it's a background story and this is mostly the story of her sister.

There is some crazy as hell stuff going on in this book. Ridiculous, but in a way that I absolutely enjoyed and I'm not even ashamed. It's because of that reason that I just couldn't put it down. I needed to know what the hell was going to happen, because it was so different than anything I expected it to be.

Rue was a good narrator but I just could not get into this book. Gwen and Rachel are a bit annoying and over-the-top characters.

"*****FIVE STARS: A MUST FOR YOUR AUDIO COLLECTION"
Would you consider the audio edition of It's Not My Favorite to be better than the print version?

Rue whimsically narrates her book It’s Not My Favorite: The Lake Effect Series, Book 1. With great effervescence, I was is transported into the world of these two sisters. What I enjoyed most about the presentation is that it felt like I was being told a juicy story from a friend. Having read the book and now having listened to it with the same attention as reading the book, I cannot decide which media I prefer as both were a joyous experience. Holding the book in my hand and turning the pages was a cozy adventure, as most bibliophiles can attest. Listening to the author Rue narrate their own work adds a layer of closeness with the artist that differs from reading the book. There were passages that were punctuated in a way that were far more fun and thrilling than when I read it. I highly recommend this audio book to one and all!

What did you like best about this story?

Plainly, the love between the two sisters and the struggles with religiosity and balancing that with family.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I have many favorite scenes. The one that stands out the best is the opening scene because it gives the listener the first impression of what will unfold in the story and how comfortable and familiar the characters will be. From the moment you have the details of the room, I was reminded of all those wonderful times in college when I would visit with friends the day after a reckless night of partying (them not me). Having likeable, realistically developed characters is critical to me as a reader. If I cannot relate to a scene or a character, I do not finish the adventure.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did want to listen to it all in one sitting but in all honesty, I did pace myself and listened to it in three sittings.

    Any additional comments?

I cannot express enough what a wonderful time I had listening to this audiobook. I shall be sharing this with my friends. I did not know what to expect and this experience really impressed me thoroughly.

    "It's not my favorite either..."
Would you try another book from Rue and/or Rue?

I would try another book from Rue as a narrator, for sure. Rue as an author, perhaps in a few years. I found the story to be promising in the beginning. It quickly lost my enthusiasm though, but I did listen to the end. I don't want to give spoilers away, but Rachel's story felt incomplete and more of a page waster and the whole Gwenn/Daniel relationship/actions on his part was so over the top and ridiculous (post test result part on) that it just turned me off.

Would you ever listen to anything by Rue again?

I would listen to another book narrated by Rue again.

What about Rue’s performance did you like?

She did a good job with the various characters and accents (the mom had a heavy Minnesota accent). Her cadence was good and I had no problem knowing who was who.

Do you think It's Not My Favorite needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I don't feel the need for a follow-up book for It's Not My Favorite, but this is the first book of a series, so there may be a follow up, depending on whether Rue goes with each book being unique characters, or more in depth stories of the other characters, or a continuation of the main characters in this book. I felt that Rachel's story was kind of thrown into this book but didn't really get proper attention that it should have. Perhaps her relationship will be focused on more in future books.

    "Not My Favorite"

I got this ARC via audiobook boom. This is supposed to b a story of two sisters and their love life. It concentrated mostly on Gwen who seemed to be lamenting that her parents are not her parents. I have a problem with the whole concept of this book. I am not into the concepts presented in the book. The narration was too fast and the story just did not work for me.

    "It's Not My Favorite"

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I expected more from this novel than I received. It's less about two sisters and more about one of the sisters and her possible brother/lover. I really liked Rachel, whose story line is mostly crammed into a few small chapters while the main plot focuses on Gwenn. I feel like Rachel would have been much more interesting as the main character in this novel, or at least a serious secondary character. Her LGBT plot line was much easier to read than Gwenn's pretty boring life. Gwenn is so desperate to escape her born again parents that she daydreams that she was swapped at birth. After finding a photo of a man that she thinks might be her father, Gwenn embarks on a journey of discovery which takes her to a possible brother and a physical journey to another continent. Daniel, I was leery about. Like... he follows Gwenn across the world after meeting her twice because he's in love with her? Why exactly did his therapist not flag this up as worrisome behaviour? I realise that the therapist tells him to get Gwenn to view him as a lover and not as a brother to progress the plot line, but I really didn't like it. He was stalking.

That being said, the best part of this novel was the interactions between Gwenn and Rachel. It was easy to feel the friendship and love between them and that sustained this novel. The audio narration was also spectacular and I found it really easy to get into.

    "Touching romance"

I just had the pleasure of listening to It’s Not my Favorite, by Rue. I absolutely loved this story. I especially enjoyed the bond between the two quirky sisters. I have two sisters that I’m very close to, so the relationship touched my heart. As a warning, there is some language and mild sexual encounters. I wasn’t offended. However, If you’re bothered by these, just be aware they are there. Aside from entertaining, I found the story to be warm, at times funny, and overall, I enjoyed the lesson of acceptance and forgiveness, and how one can hurt a relationship with intolerance. I highly recommend this book to romance readers who like a story with heart. I look forward to more from this author. The author did a great job of narrating her novel. The reading was a bit rushed in the beginning but seemed to smooth out as the story went on.
