Publisher's summary

At the tender age of 25, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she's become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she'll see her mettle - and her metal - tested like never before.

It started with two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago's vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

Critic reviews

"Rising star Neill has made the learning curve for her gutsy heroine, Merit, quite steep, which means the journey is all the more spellbinding." ( Romantic Times)

House Rules

Things are getting set into motion, I kind of like the way the story is detouring.
I can’t wait to see where this new direction is going to take Merit but I have a feeling it will be for the good.
I think everyone in the house are in for an awakening but in a good way.

Again I am loving Sophie’s narration her voices for some people make the audio experience so much more.

Moving Forward

I enjoyed this story. It moved several storylines further down the line and showed some growth in Merit's personal relationships. She seems to be putting her relationship with Mallory back together and it was nice to see her actually have a decent conversation with her father. There wasn't really a whole lot of Catcher in this story but it was great to finally learn what Jeff shifts into. I loved the back story on Peter Cadogan and the return of some people we'd seen before. I can't wait for the next book to come out. Sophie Eastlake did fine as a narrator but I thought she actually did better on the previous book.

Narrator still is lousy with male voices

Any additional comments?

Narrator still has no clue how to do male voices that don't sound the same. We either get tired or bored. Overall Story was good.

Narrator improving with each book

I wanted to disagree with those who have expressed disappointment with Sophie Eastlake's performance. I started the series a few weeks ago and have been listening to them one after another (and really enjoying them!).

It was disconcerting to get to book 6 and find a new narrator, and I did have some trouble adjusting to the change at first, but with House Rules I thought that Sophie Eastlake really hit her stride and did an excellent job.

I've just started Book 8, Biting Bad, and the performance is only getting better in my opinion. In fact I think that is the big improvement over the previous narrator. There is a lot more theatricality to the way she voices the characters and their emotions. I find her very believable.

Good Story; Better Than Expected Performance

Where does House Rules rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book was enjoyable enough that I have listened to it 3 times so far. This is difficult to answer considering I have over 100 books.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the author combined 3 different storylines into one cohesive mix.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scenes included Lacey, Ethan and Merrit.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. The book was evenly enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

Previous reviews complained about the new narrator. I found her performance to be just fine with the exception that the male voices could be more distinguishable. Since I have listened to this book more than once, the male voices have grown on me. Eastlake does a better job of acting than the previous narrator and she at least can pronounce words correctly.
