Publisher's summary

The ruthless enforcer of Scotland's most powerful clan, Jamie Campbell will use any means necessary to vanquish lawlessness and unrest among the feuding Highland clans. Seduction is a game as easily played as subterfuge, but when Jamie poses as a suitor to a rival clan's daughter in order to expose treason, the line between duty and pleasure is suddenly blurred. Ebony-haired, ruby-lipped Caitrina Lamont defies him, denies him, and arouses him like no other woman. Caitrina has no intention of forsaking her beloved father and doting brothers for a husband-especially a hated Campbell. But Jamie's raw, sensual strength and searing kiss melt her resistance. When her idyllic world is shattered, Caitrina's only hope to save her clan lies in the arms of Jamie Campbell, the enemy she holds accountable for its ruin. Can their tenuous truce, born in the velvet darkness of passionate nights, forge a love as strong as the sword that rules the Highlands?

Critic reviews

"Sexy, full of action, and realistically violent, this story of 17th-century Scotland touches on issues of family loyalty and duty and expertly kicks off McCarty's back-to-back Clan Campbell trilogy." ( Library Journal)

I am so torn, I loved it, I hated it

Okay the love had a lot to do with the narrator, his voice of Jaimie Cambell....oh my! Deep, seductive, with a Scottish brogue...oh the shivers! I also liked that this wasn't a typical highlander story...there was a reluctant woman who didn't want to get married....but just as I thought we would get to the marriage sooner rather than later all heck broke loose. The hero waited months to find his would be bride again and again was refused...with REALLY good reason.

Now the part I hated...how is it that the author painted a strong independent woman yet she can't make up her mind about anything! She wants him, she doesn't, she needs him, she doesn't, she loves him, she doesn't, she trusts him, she doesn't.....UGH!!!! I wanted to strangle the heroine myself, she was annoying right up to and including the final chapter. I don't see myself getting book 2 unless it goes in the $4.95 sale....it wasn't totally not worth reading but I wouldn't do it again.

Fanstastic Hero/ So-So Heroine

I love a good Highlander book, so when I read the reviews about this book I was thrilled to start reading it. But after 12 hours of this book, I can safely say that I have never read about a more infuriating heroine in my life. She constantly makes the same mistakes over and over again. It gotten to a point that you can predict the outcome because you knew she was going to make a mistake, again. Caitrina never gives Jaime the benefit of doubt, which is sad because Jamie is really a good man. He makes this book worth listening to. At first I understood Caitrina position and sympathized with her but after Jamie kept proving his worth to her I started to get to a point where I didn’t want Caitrina with Jaime. She didn’t deserve him. So is this book worth a listening, if you have nothing else to listen to give it a shot.

Entertaining ...But...

The story was good enough to keep me lisening, but the main character was frustrating...making the same mistrakes over and over again, she was hard to like..but the Jamie Campbell character makes up for it, he was a great hero and you really rooted for him, Bottom line... I will listen to other books in this series, but I am not rushing out to buy them right after finishing this book.

Excellent start for the Campbell trilogy!

This is a great book. It is as epic and memorable, in my opinion, as McCarty's Highland Guard series.

I adored the heroine! The hero is infamous for his ruthlessness. There are definitely moments where I had trouble with the Hero's "duty" to his cousin and his beliefs in the "law". There are injustices suffered in this book that inflamed my anger. But this is a trilogy. What goes around comes around in the end... Mostly. :)

I do love this series. Do yourself a favor and buy all three!

Also, Roger Hampton does an outstanding job narrating!

Great start to a great series.

This is a really great series of books by Monica McCarty, love stories between feuding clans in the Highlands. Highland books are about the Campbells and Highlander books are about the MacLeods. Get them all and listen to them in order - you won't be disappointed.

Well worth a credit.

Roger Hampton's Scottish voices made them a real winner for me.

Yum! Katrina chose well!

Would you consider the audio edition of Highland Warrior to be better than the print version?

For sure! Narrator was great!

What other book might you compare Highland Warrior to and why?

Hard to compare, because it was so good! I wish I could be guaranteed a read (listen) this good every time!!

Have you listened to any of Roger Hampton???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He's always good...but the excellent story and characters make it all come together!

Any additional comments?

Best use of a credit, ever!

Great Story - Annoying Female Lead

Is there anything you would change about this book?

If the female lead says "wait...you don't understand" or "I'm sorry" or (paraphrased) I think I made him mad again, I'd better keep him from going, one more time; I'm going to scream!!!

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Give the female lead some maturity. She has an awesome, honest, man. After over 8 hours of listening, she still uses her sexuality to get her way, and refuses to understand the politics and dangers of her time.

Which character – as performed by Roger Hampton – was your favorite?

Jamie Campbell...what a man!

Could you see Highland Warrior being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No - the female lead is to annoying. However, Jason Momoa would be an excellent Highlander!

Any additional comments?

Wish more authors would write a righteous good man like this into their books. Jamie has the patience of a saint.

Groan....

Roger Hampton gave a great performance, but the book was just too far fetched to be enjoyable.

It was too unbelievable to imagine Jamie Campbell, the feared and ruthless enforcer of Scotland's most powerful clan, would allow Katrina to talk back to him in front of his men and others as she did in the book. Katrina was pathetic---she made the same mistakes over and over, her unreasoning stubbornness over-ruled common sense.

I normally like Highlander books, but it appears to me Monica McCarty believed that in Highland Warrior the explicit sexual content could carry the book. Sorry, but I like a book with a story to tell, likable characters, romance and a somewhat believable story-line. In my opinion Highland Warrior fell short in all.

Make up your mind!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

In general the story was imaginative. I really like James Campbell. Caitrina drove me crazy with her 'I love him but how can I trust him' nonsense.

How could the performance have been better?

Narrator lacked enthusiasm. Good voice, good character differentiation but just lackluster in general.

Got a sex scene? Now write a story around it!

I am so very glad that I got this book on sale!
Monica McCarthy is a new author to me, and I am not impressed.
This story lacks "reason-ability" I found it to be both frustrating and predictable.
I do not recommend this book if you like clever stories, with smart reasonable female characters.
