Publisher's summary

Marcus MacPherson is every inch the fearsome Highlander. He's used to men averting their eyes and women cowering before him. He thinks he'll eventually settle down with a nice, obedient bride. Instead, he gets Helen Grant.

Stubborn as the day is long, fearless, and dedicated to raising as much hell as possible, Helen is definitely going to challenge Marcus. And challenge him some more. And then some. It's anyone's guess who'll win this battle of the heart. Contains mature themes.

Good

Story was different. Not my Favorite audio book. Antony Ferguson does a fine job narrating.

Vixen....

Medieval romance full of deceit and honor, love and discontent, strife and smiles and ALL the stuff that makes it good.

Anthony Ferguson is the perfect narrator for this one!

Sex? Yup. Heat?, yup.

Creditworthy? Oh yes!

The Machinations of the Regent are quite frustrating!

Who did I dislike in this story? The king’s Regent, Lord Morton. Talk about someone who cannot mind his own business! That poor couple had to marry three times in order to stay married. I kept hoping someone would assassinate him but I knew from studying history that wasn’t going to happen! They had to wait until 1578 when he was forced from office. By that time James was old enough to participate in governing his country but didn’t gain full control for five years, in 1583 when he was 17, the usual age of majority at that time. As for the story: Although a good writer, I do not think Ms. Wine is the best author I’ve heard on Audible. I don’t mean to be insulting but I just don’t feel the joy of the characters as I have with other writers. There always seems to be an undertow of sadness among the characters no matter what is happening. At first I thought it was the narrator’s reading of the story but 3/4 of the way through I realized it was the writing. How many times in one story does the heroine need to be kidnapped? How many times does someone in the story have to die or be close to death? How many times does a woman have to be raped or nearly raped? I realize that this time in Scottish life was a brutal time with raids, abductions and men striving for money and power but for “reading pleasure” there has to be a limit.

Good

I liked it despite it being confusing to follow sometimes. It was kind of jumbled especially with all the kidnapping going on

Almost okay but mostly boring in the first half

It took me months to finish this story because I started it one day, paused it, and then I totally forgot about it. I think that speaks to the quality of the story. I have finally finished it and only because I don’t like reviewing a book unless I have tried my best to finish it. This book is better than the following one but the premise is repeated. A woman is kidnapped multiple times and romance happens during that turmoil. That’s it. I almost gave it 3 stars but there was a moment when Marcus thinks about spanking his wife to teach her a lesson and that lowered the rating immediately. I don’t care that he only thought it and didn’t say it or act on it. This is a romance book and the love interest shouldn’t think about hitting his love interest. They were really into each other and Marcus definitely respected his wife more than other men in this series. But, like I stated earlier, I won’t stand for men thinking they can hit their wives to correct them. Is it historically accurate? Sure. But this is historical FICTION! Some leeway is allowed and I think it should be taken.

The narration was fine. Wish he did better female voices.

Helen is unbearable

This book is hard to listen to. Helen is so contradictory and ridiculous. I had to fast forward half of the book so that I didn’t have to listen to her being a brat for no reason

Story and laughs.

Was a good story, and made me laugh with lots of amusing situations. Helen is a woman of my own heart. Anthony Ferguson is my favorite narrator. I would love to find more books 📚 similar to this. Thanks to both the author and the narrator. Oh, also Thanks to Tantor Audible books.

It felt incomplete.

Enjoyed

Marcus and Helen, what can I say they just work together, but it makes you wonder how this story would be developed. At times the story frustrated me but it worked its way out and I enjoyed the book. As far as the women are concerned, so far in this series, their life struggles are the same. If each story has this, it can get a little boring.
