Publisher's summary

Matilda, Duchess of Hadshire, is virtually a prisoner of her cruel husband, who romances his mistress right under the duchess' nose. Her only joy is dreaming of the handsome Earl of Torridon - for like her, he is trapped in a horrid marriage and longs to find true love and happiness.

Though she secretly wishes for the death of her unkind husband, Matilda never could have imagined the guilt that plagues her when the illustrious duke is befittingly murdered by his own mistress! When Matilda turns to Torridon for comfort, she discovers a few surprises are in store for both of them.

Excruciating! Could not finnish...

Sometimes..... on occasion....... one comes across a narrative that is done SO badly done that it is too painful to listen to. This was one of those.

Wanders

This seemed to get off track and go longer than necessary. It was interesting at first, waiting to see how the heroine would come out of her situation. But that would have made for a very short story, so subplots were tagged on. I started losing interest after that. Beaton is generally a sure bet for fun entertainment, so maybe I’ll try this again another time when I have more patience. The narrator’s cadence takes a little getting used to, but I don’t find her as bad as others say. She sure beats the shaky vocal fry of Justine Eyre.

awful.

I don't know why I'm still listening to this series. the story in this book was stupid and the narrator was terrible. worse than the first book, and that's really saying something.

Very poor narration.

Not much else to say. The story was already mediocre, and the narration made it unbearable.

Horrific Naration!

Narrator was SO AWFUL that I couldn't wait for the book to end! I will NEVER listen to another book that is narrated by her. The male lead was made to sound angry & hostile in Every Scene, and the female lead always sounded as if she were highly medicated & monotone. Truly Awful for my ears. Sadly, I couldn't say if I enjoyed the story line or not - couldn't enjoy anything about it because of the narration!

She rises to her challenge s

Sad beginning funny ending She is feeling helpless but then begins to help herself and still has more trials to over come. I love the ending with the stool, I like how she is kid to those to work for her as well as her neighbors

Good, a bit long but funny

It was a cute story, unique and clean but it dragged in parts... still 2 romances in one.
Narration detracted from the story greatly. The male voices were offputting.

Good story, terrible narrator

The narrator almost spoiled the book with her bizarre pronunciations and cringy attempts at doing different voices. Not sure how she got the gig!

Too silly

By the end I wanted to give all of the characters arsenic. I would be embarrassed to recommend this to anyone.

Quirky smart fun!!!

Perfect for Halloween season, this is Marion Chesney at her best. Tongue in cheek romance with dark humor. I can’t get enough.
