Getting Worked Up: Sapphire Falls, Book Two

Phoebe Sherwood is in love with the perfect man. Well, except for the fact that he's in love with someone else. But Phoebe isn't the type to let a little detail like that keep her from getting what she wants.

And as she's plotting how to get him back, she meets the perfect solution: Joe Spencer. The city boy is in town to retrieve his sort-of fiancée - the woman who stole Phoebe's man - and when he hears Phoebe's plan to reclaim their respective soul mates, he's in.

Bright and sparkly. That's Joe's first impression of Phoebe. He's always been attracted to sparkly things - like neon casino signs, sequined evening gowns, and Porsches. In fact his affinity for those things and the trouble they can cause are exactly why he's determined to change his habits and settle down.

But if he's going to win his girl back, he's going to need to learn a new way of life. Country line dancing, guzzling homemade moonshine, and getting rid of his custom-made suits are what it takes to fit into Sapphire Falls...and he's got some work to do.

Thank goodness Phoebe is the perfect coach.

And everything will be just fine...as long as they can keep their hands off of each other and remember which hearts they are trying to win over.

You should listen to this book if you like quirky small towns, over-the-top romantic gestures, hot descriptive love scenes, naughty words, and country music. You should not listen to this if you don't like - well, any of the things above.

Enjoyable book

Joe and Phoebe have one thing in common- they want to stop their best friends from getting engaged so they can have them for themselves. This was a enjoyable book watching Joe learn about small town life and Phoebe see that there may be more than Sapphire Falls.

Didn’t see it coming

I like the idea of romance in a small town where everyone knows everyone else,a sense of community.Phoebe is an outgoing, friendly, fear nothing kind of girl,as well as a knockout even though she doesn’t know it.Joe is a risqué City boy from Sin City who’s been around the block more times than he cares to admit, then he meets Phoebe, his exact type. He’s trying to settle down and what better person to do that with is his lifelong best friend Nadia, but Nadia is in love with Phoebes best friend and crush Matt.So they devise a plan to help each other to win the hearts of their friends by pretending to be dating each other, but it back fires a lot quicker than they expected, explains that maybe what they feelings for their best friends isn’t what they thought it was not if its so easy to give in to the passion blazing through them.

Common goals

Phoebe and Joe get together to derail the proposal they think is coming from Phoebe's best friend, Matt to the girl Joe wants, Natalie. But while Phoebe and Joe work on that, they start having feelings- physical and emotional- towards each other. Who will end up together? Will their friends help or hurt them? I liked this book set in Sapphire Falls and I'm looking forward to listening to the rest.

Instant Chemistry

The chemistry between Joe and Phoebe was instantaneous. They had a unique meeting, as they got together for the most unconventional of reasons. They were both fun and exciting. It made them work really well together. And made for an entertaining story.

Better then I thought it would be.

I’m going to start reading reviews after I read/listen to a book.
Sexed scenes don’t bother me like it does some.
These two have great chemistry.

Worthy of 5* even with critique

Oh Joe Joe Joe… *spoiler alert, will try to be vague*

I’ll preface by saying I know it’s fiction. With that, this type in the genre is based around real feelings, cause and effects, consequences, etc.

For Joe’s idea of pushing her towards others, leaving, and then just hoping he’s chosen in the end, there has to a strong attachment to the idea of “the one”. And not for yourself. You have to believe in the idea so strongly that you believe it applies to everyone.

Joe pushes her to see others and have the experience of being desired. Couple problems with that. First, the story said she did all of that. She wasn’t some blushing virgin, the opposite actually. She had that with men outside her hometown (story will get into why). So there’s a disconnect of her not knowing what it feels like to be desired. Second, I don’t want to speak for all guys as a guy, but our possessiveness comes from more than an innate primal place. It’s almost common sense. If you don’t lock her up, someone else will. Because in a man’s experience, no matter how intense the connection, if you sever it and push her towards other’s arms, she’ll eventually choose someone else for good. It’s one of the reasons we have to continue affirming that love in the relationship because if we don’t, again, she can choose someone else. Keeping other men away from “what’s ours” is another part of that. Less likely chance her eyes are drawn away… and yeah, that’s a little old school and maybe backwards, but it’s a realistic feeling that is part of what fuels possessiveness. That has to be mixed with the positive and healthy actions of consistently affirming that loving bond, of course.

But for a guy to literally push her towards others?? At worst, the girl is gaslit to the level of feeling she can’t live without him, at best I can imagine, is a foolish level of over-confidence to the point of stupidity which Joe clearly showed he a big lack of confidence in his actions. Yeah, he loved her and wanted her to have all the good feelings, but damn, there are a million other ways to enjoy and be happy in life. So she didn’t grow up in her hometown experiencing the joy of being openly pursued? It’s life, we’ve all lacked something major in one way or another.

I was impressed with how the author ended the story, though, and I’m glad it worked out in a way that kind of made sense.

Forever starts by not getting what you want

I loved Phoebe and Joe’s opposites attract, small town romance with a side of accidental love. The heartwarming story had a wonderful mix of fun, sweet, steam, real life issues, and laughs. Phoebe is a loud, energetic and sweet teacher from small town Sapphire Falls. She in love with her best friend, Matt, and has been waiting for him to be ready to settle down to make her move. When she finds out he intends to propose to his girlfriend, Nadia, she decides time is up. Joe is a PR manager and media consultant for IAS based in Sapphire Falls. His best friend is Nadia and he wants her as his calm stabilizing wife. When he hears she’s going to propose to Matt, he decides to woo her back. Since their end goals align, their joint plan is for Phoebe to help Joe become more small town so Nadia will fall for Joe and Phoebe can have Matt. Of course, the more time they spend together introducing Joe to small town life, the more their chemistry sizzled off the page and pulled them together no matter how hard they tried to resist. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline with sweet moments, steamy scenes, supportive friends, imperfect characters, missteps, and all the big feels. I am excited to binge this whole series.

Kate Udall did a good job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters convincingly. I love the added dimension narration gives to a story.
