Publisher's summary

Sometimes you have to risk it all.

Emma Wright has finally escaped the dangerous man who's controlled her every move for the past six years. Taking her 5-year-old son, she has fled across the country seeking freedom, safety, and a fresh start. But Max's father isn't giving them up so easily.

Preston Holman understands the lengths a parent will go for his child. He's given up everything to pursue the man he believes killed his son.

When Preston meets Emma, he wants nothing to do with her or the boy who reminds him so much of his own child. Yet he can't abandon them, and as he's drawn into the danger that surrounds them, Preston begins to wonder if he's finally found something to live for beyond revenge.

Critic reviews

"Novak knows how to relate a suspenseful tale." (Publishers Weekly)
"Strongly defined characters, sizzling sexual tension, and a tautly constructed plot steeped in danger blend brilliantly together in Novak's exceptionally intense, powerfully emotional novel of romantic suspense." (Booklist)

Great listen!

This book was great to listen to and it kept me very interested. The characters were believable and once you got use to the narrators voice it was very good. She did great impressions of men, a child and her Spanish was very good. The story itself held your interest and intrigue although I did grimace at the abuse in the story although that was part of the story and I don't see how it could have been cut out. All in all the book deserves 4 1/2 stars!!

Suspenseful

This book kept me engaged with its close calls and fairly well-developed characters. The son's diabetes was integral to the story and I learned a lot about the disease. The themes of spousal abuse and obsession with revenge were credible. The love scenes were steamy but not overly explicit. The reader's voice sounds a little child-like at first, but I quickly got used to it. The only jarring note was the way any non-essential female character was made to sound like a little girl from deep Texas!

Predictable but good

The heroine is resourceful but needs a man to help her out. The hero is afraid of committment but ends up committing. The ex is really nasty. The good guys win. Entertaining and well done, but quite predictable.

Great Book

I enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written and can appreciate the issues that diabets have.

Not even good enough to be considered 'fluff'

This book was listed in the mystery section of Audible new releases or I would not have considered purchasing it at all. It is the silliest, most insipid excuse for any kind of mystery, and is without any merit that I can see at all. The story could be written by a tweleve year old and would probably be better written as it would leave out all the simpering, long, adoring looks, and whinning on the part of the 'heroine'. Please don't waste your book credit on this unless you are into mindless pratter.

Every waking hour.

There was too much information regarding her son's diabetes.

Great book!

This was my introduction book to Audible and it got me hooked. I listen in my car while commuting and found it hard to not bring it in and listen at home on the weekends. Great story!

I absolutely loved this *Spoiler*

This book had the perfect amount of romance and suspense to keep the story interesting. I do feel like rhere should be a trigger warning here in the reviews for a part in the book for those that are bothered by abuse. But thankfully, it is not a huge part of the book.

I do think it is a little unhealthy that the main character is going straight from an abusive relationship right onto a different relationship. Especially how at the end, the man told the child who has just lost his father "I'll be your daddy". That bothered me a lot. But aside from that, I thought it was so sweet and I'm glad that the main character was able to get away from the horrible relationship and be happy again.

I loved the book, but then it became too corny

I was loving it until the very end. It would have been a 5 but for one phrase. I’m not sure if it was the performer or the actual story, but it just made seem corny.

good read

This is a good read, despite the fact that you sometimes want to skake the heroine for not being smarter.
