Publisher's summary

Mattie Riehl never expected her life to turn out this way. Raised Mennonite and among Amish friends in beautiful Lancaster County, she should be perfectly content, shouldn't she? But something inside beckons her to another world, another life. Can she leave her roots and her friends behind for a world she knows little about? Will she abandon everything, including the god her parents have taught her to follow?

Englisch on Purpose is the prequel to J.E.B. Spredemann's award-winning book Amish by Accident and is the story of Elisabeth Schrock's best friend, Mattie.

Ok

I got this book via audiobook boom. I read book 3 before reading this one so I basically understood what was going on. The narrator did a good job of moving the story along. I believe that the books need to be listened to in order in order to get a full sense of the story. Although they can each be read as stand alone books.

book seemed written for a young teen. simply put.

Reader had very little pitch and tone invert voice. Ending left you completely hanging. Book seems
very simplistic. The few description words were at about a forth grade level.

Englisch on Purpose

Englisch on Purpose: A Prequel to Amish by Accident
: J. E. B. Spredemann

A story of a young woman's journey to discovering what she wants in life. There was sadness and lack of faith to deal with. This is not the sticky, gooey sweet Amish romance. I want to hear the rest of the series.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Kay L. Dees reading was way too slow for my taste. I put it on my Kindle and doubled the speed to make it more listenable for me.

Appreciate the Gospel, but goes nowhere

Mattie is Mennonite. Maddie moves to New York, leaving her family and best friend behind. The best friend (Elizabeth) misses Maddie. But, she has a beau. Will Elizabeth stay or leave the Amish (the girls are from different plain communities) or go to New York with Matty? Meanwhile, Matty's potential love interest, Richard, is on fire for the Lord, which is the best part of the book. But, the end just peter's out...there is absolutely no closure in these relationships and the book leaves you wondering what is going to happen to these relationships and who is going to live where. I understand this is a prequel to "Amish by Accident"-- but what I've read in the book reviews, it seems like these questions are never answered... I'll see when I listen to it. I'm also confused as to how you can get closure with a prequel when the next book in the series was actually written a couple years before this book. It's all very confusing. The narration was very poor, and I always try to give the narrator a break, but there was inflections that were just weird. At one solemn point in the book, the narrator has Mattie sounding like she's happy when the scene in a hospital called for solemnity.... it happened all throughout the book. Also, the narrator didn't change voice inflections at all, so I was confused as to who was talking a great deal of the time.
