Publisher's summary

Karen Essex is an internationally best-selling author who has also published award-winning articles in major publications such as L.A. Weekly and Vogue. With Dracula in Love, Essex offers a lushly written retelling of one of literature’s classic gothic novels.

In the pages of her journal, Mina Murray confesses the erotic devilment and nocturnal horrors of her time with Count Dracula. And what she writes says as much about her desires as it does about the Count’s - something no one, not even her fiancé Jonathan Harker, could ever understand. Readers everywhere will succumb to Essex’s sumptuous prose and thrill to celebrated reader Bianca Amato’s tantalizing delivery, the intoxicating effects of which will occupy listeners’ minds through the darkest of nights.

I couldn't stop listening!

What did you love best about Dracula in Love?

I really enjoyed the author's take on Dracula's origins and his and Mina's connection (and the origin of their relationship). I also felt that the author accurately portrayed the abuse of what when on in asylum's and the primitive view on women during the Victorian era, not that was enjoyable, but I appreciated the realism which led to the suspension of disbelief, but even more than that, this is a version that I could actually believe really happened! (mabey)"

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dracula in Love?

When Mina's memories return to her and we learn of her connection to Dracula

What does Bianca Amato bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did an AMAZING job, her British accent completely enhanced the story since it takes place in England and parts of Ireland. If I had just read it, I would have heard it in my mind with my own American accent thus detracting from the enjoyment of story. Her charater voices were also amazing!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"The re-telling of a Classic, from Mina's point of view!"

Any additional comments?

I must confess I've never read (or listened to) Bram Stoker's book, only seen various movies from the book (I'm thinking of the Gary Oldman version in particular). This story had all the same elements with different explinations of the events that took place in the original story.

Although I can't think of a better title as I'm reviewing this, I really don't like the title for this story. I've read on Good Reads website others feel this was a story more about sex than love, I tend to disagree, I found Dracula's bond to Mina very romantic, but mabey that's just me. And although there were many scenes of a sexual nature, there was nothing IMHO that was lewd (which is so prominent in vampire stories).

The feminist in me felt so competely outraged at times in listening to this story, but I feel this lent to the credibility of the story, because the attitudes surely did exist in those days, just a heads up if you are sensitive to this sort of thing.

awful

Not the Vampiric happy ending I was looking for.
This was a huge waste of time. A horrible ending.

Sadly, I got bored with it

I didn't end up finishing this book. The narrator was good. I would listen to other books she narrates. The story just didn't grab me. I think I got about half way through before giving up.

It’s so hard to find a Dracula romance and this has become one of my favorites!

50% filler.

50% of this book was just filler. 80% of the book was very boring. throughout the book we Are repeatedly shown that Jonathan Harker is a weak and selfish husband, despite this Mina chooses him in the end. she is portrayed in the book to be an intelligent, independent, and strong woman. yet if that were true she would have chosen to raise her child with Dracula or alone. but she choose to go back to Jonathan because he was the father of the child and she couldn't raise a child without him. let me tell you something if my husband went into a jealous rage because he saw a man in a photograph with me and then 10 minutes later had me committed to an asylum where I was tortured nearly to death. the last thing I'd want to do is raise a child with him and the first thing I would do is destroy him.

Gothic vibe - check

Dang, so much better than I could have ever imagined. First, it was our book club pick for October --I haven’t cherished any form of love w/their selections in the past year – so it was a good cerebral shocker with this choice.
First of all, read Bram Stoker's actual book before you read this story. It will make all the difference I believe.

That said, this hit the mark for a gothic retelling of Dracula, tho, from Mina voice. I was absolutely floored that I could clearly see a very decent line that linked the two stories – nice job. And the twists from Mina's voice was contemporary yet, goth Victorian-esque. The author reveals at the end of the novel that she dug up actual Victorian medical transcripts/manual to thrust in the interesting plot conflicts.

But the lewd sex scenes, eeekk. A bit stomach-turning at times – especially since I wasn’t expecting it. Not sure why the author went this route but I’m guessing it will definitely make her story stand out in the genre.

Not sure who I would recommend this to but for a book club read, it’s a unicorn. I asked the moderator did she know about the sex scenes and she went pale. LOL, can’t wait for the gathering!!! I’m sure all the one & two stars are just but I doubt many of readers read the original and can’t see how the author stayed within the lines to write her retelling.

Wonderful take on a classic tale.

Though it clings to a few clique it was a frest take on a classic tale. Just as fantastical as the original but slightly steamier! recomended.

Bianca Amato brings it to life!

I wish the ending was a little better. I felt like it left me hanging. But I could listen to this book over and over simply to hear Bianca Amato. No one reads a story like she does!
