Publisher's summary

Cal Buchanan needs a top-flight chef to take over his failing Seattle restaurant, The Waterfront. He can afford to hire the best in town, the only problem is that the best happens to be his ex-wife, Penny Jackson.

Penny really needs this opportunity, but she doesn't need the distraction of working with her ex. She's sworn off romance; she's even having a baby on her own. But before she knows it, the heat is on, and the attraction between her and Cal moves from a low simmer to a full boil.

The rest should be easy as pie, but a secret from Dessert Cal's past could spoil everything. Maybe it's true that too many cooks spoil the broth, but then, maybe two are enough to make it irresistible.

Critic reviews

"When you think of passion, drama and heartwarming stories, think Susan Mallery." ( Romantic Times)
"A wonderful cast of characters, from the truly evil family matriarch to the argumentative, stubborn, but close-knit Buchanan siblings. Glimpses into the everyday workings of a restaurant, from buying produce to selecting wines, add to the enjoyment." ( Booklist)

cute, sweet

The is my first Susan Mallory book and I liked it. I read the reviews and learned this is the first book in a series of 4 so I plan to listen to them in order. The characters are good and I look forward to hearing about how the lives of the other brothers and sister turn out. Gloria is a human nightmare and I hope at some point she softens. This is a typical romance book but who doesn't like happy endings!

DELICIOUS

I loved this book, her writing is very similar to Susan Elizabeth Phillips which I love. I downloaded the other 3 books in the series and looking foward to a good listen. I wish they would add more downloads from this author, I made the request. I hope to find more funny, romantic books.

Without Content

I picked out this book because I thought it would be a fun, easy read. I like chick lit and I thought the chef theme would be a neat backdrop. There's not enough going on inside this book but the romance, which is totally predictable, and a few subplots. I could not finish it. Soooo boring to listen to the characters talk to one another about the same plot lines. It was an empty book that actually motivated me to review it which I do not normally do because I could have used my audible credits on so many more deserving books.

Review

So, I listened to this while working, as I do most of my audio books, and got teary eyed from all the bad stuff that went down. Not the best thing while working. I can honestly say the ending didn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

Delicious food... So so story...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it although this is not a fantastic book. Susan Mallery stories, specially if narrated by Therese Plummer are like eating a delicious chocolate. You always enjoy it even if it's not good for you.

Would you be willing to try another book from Susan Mallery? Why or why not?

Yes, I would except the Fools Gold series which has a terrible narrator.

Which character – as performed by Therese Plummer – was your favorite?

Therese Plummer is the best narrator ever. My favorite character on this book was Penny. She was broken hearted from her divorced but she bounced back stronger, whiling to be a single working mom. She was excellent in her job and not a wimp. She stood up to the evil witch of a grandmother Cal has.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Cooking up a storm...

Any additional comments?

The story is based around a divorced couple who rediscovers each other while trying to save a failing restaurant in Seattle. I've listened to all the books in this series. This one was my least favorite of all but you should listen to it to get the background info that will make you enjoy the other books more.

Delicious: not to my taste

The author repeats information every few chapters. With very nearly the same words. The characters are scene driven and so act and react in...unexpected...ways. She handles the less socially acceptable characters without smarm or condescension, which I found nice and saves the book from being pretty much a total loss for me. Part of my dismay with many of Ms Mallery's books is that her 'strong female characters' often act without dignity or charm or strength and this book is not an exception.
The narrator is capable and it was only occasionally that I had to stop and try to figure out which character spoke a particular line because the 'voice' didn't match previous lines by said character.
This is one of those authors for whom I will occasionally override my memories and good sense and purchase; general results ensure that I do not buy her again for a couple of years. I did enjoy the print version of Already Home that I found on the library shelf, which prompted the purchase of Delicious.

Mediocre

Started better than it ended. Rather uninspired and predictable. Characters were likeable, but entire pregnancy concept was unrealistic.

Delicious

No real plot, need narrator who can correctly pronounce names of cities (Spokane) and "sex scenes" are straight out of a paperback romance novel. Do not waste a credit on this one.

a pre-teen novel

The guy in this, Cal, is an empty headed void. Anna Field is the narrator, and I do like her reading voice though. Other than that, frustratingly simple plot--forget this one!
