Publisher's Summary

Eric Drake, a powerful Dark Wolf, has never trusted himself around human females - preferring to mate only within his pack. That is, until he encounters Chelsea Smart snooping around Silvercrest pack land in search of her missing sister.

Secretly, Chelsea thinks Eric is the sexiest man she's ever seen, though she is wary of his potent Alpha energy. Then it's discovered that Chelsea's sister is being held by a pack of vicious Lycans, and Eric heroically leaps into action. Now, Chelsea will risk everything - her body and soul - to surrender to the passion that will mark her as Eric's woman for all eternity…if they survive.

I really really tried but........

It was a great start - gorgeous Alpha Lican Eric attracted to a damsel in his woods and in distress but the further into this story I got it kept referring to crucial past events that had happened and past matings by other members of the Bloodrunners that I felt it was missing out on important facts. Then, after finishing it, I found out that this is actually book 4 in the Bloodrunners series! Don't you just hate that - it's like watching a film half way through and not getting either the mood of or the full story - yes it's watchable but lacking and incomplete.

I think partly for that reason the book fell a little short for me, yes it was an enjoyable enough listen but I'm sure it would have been even more so if I could have related to all the characters mentioned and each of their previous stories. Coupled with that, there were a few 'inconsistencies' like "no bullets can kill a Lican only decapitation and total blood loss" but later Eric broke the kneck of one killing him and when Chelsea shoots one she kills him with one shot. I liked Chelsea in the beginning but despite Eric rescuing her, paying for a motel for her, saving her life, protecting her etc etc etc she became one of those infuriating selfish women that can't see past herself.

It seemed to be a very one-sided passion but not mutually passionate, there were sex scenes but they always seemed unbalanced and not sexy and lots of talking even during the 'claiming' which should have been an intense moment.

Worth a credit? If I'd listened to the previous three books then maybe my answer would have been different but I just felt this missed the magic - so for all the reasons mentioned, I'm sorry to say NO.

Not quite as good as the previous books!

I liked the story, overall. However, I did not care for the Heroine very much. I consider myself a feminist but, the Heroine went WAY OVERBOARD with her feminism. Of course, I realize that women have been put in roles that are unfair and they truly have still not been given total equal rights; not receiving equal pay for work, for example. With that being said, the fact is that men and women are not the same. No feminist movement is going to change the fact that it is the female sex that carries and births offspring and males are usually stronger. So what? It doesn’t mean that both sexes can’t be recognized as different but also be equally respected in those differences. The Heroine is over the top, with her feminist views and she openly criticized other characters in the books because of how they treated Eric unfair but she sees no problem with the way she makes statements claiming that all men have the same bad characteristics. There is nothing I hate more than a hypocrite and not liking the Heroine really put a damper on my enjoyment of the book. I still plan to continue with the series, however.

Meh.....

What would have made Dark Wolf Rising better?

A better heroine to start. Chelsea's behavior had me rolling my eyes constantly and by 2/3 of the way through the book, I really wanted to turn it off. She's selfish and so self involved that when she finally comes to her senses I really didn't care anymore. There were also several inconsistencies within the story line that made me wonder if the other books in this series were similar. This is book four by the way.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not another book by Rhyannon Byrd. Don't waste your money or your credits.

How could the performance have been better?

Since I found the heroine irritating and the book difficult to finish, the performance by Clarissa Knightly also fell flat for me. I don't know if it was the book itself and there was nothing Ms Knightly could have done to make it better or if she just couldn't make the characters more compelling.

What character would you cut from Dark Wolf Rising?

I'd start over completely. It wasn't the worst book I have ever listened to but I have to say it ranks up there with ones I will never listen to again.
