Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of Watch Your Back and Did You Miss Me comes the newest novel by "the queen of romantic suspense" (Crime and Punishment).

Psychologist Faith Corcoran is desperate to escape the stalker who's made her life a nightmare for the past year--desperate enough to run to the one place that has been her nightmare for far longer. Both boon and bane, her recent inheritance of her grandmother's old house in Cincinnati offers a sanctuary in which she can start her life anew but requires that she face dark memories that resonate to this day.

She has no idea, however, just how close to home her fears still are...

Two college girls have gone missing in the area, and FBI special agent Deacon Novak is called to work on the case. When his inquiry unexpectedly leads him to Faith, he finds a beautiful and brave woman for whom he can't help but fall. Soon they'll discover that this seemingly simple investigation is anything but. Reaching back decades into Faith's own past, it will shatter everything she believes to be true and will give terrifying new meaning to flesh and blood.

hard to stop listening

Would you listen to Closer Than You Think again? Why?

Yes, will listen to it again. I love loooong books. This was a perfect long listen adventure. Never really figured it out. Kept me listening and loved the narrator Hillary Huber. So much easier than Margarite. Every voice was distinct and her voice did not quaver. Nice on the ears. Thank you Hillary!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Closer Than You Think?

Memories of the basement. I lived in a house with a creepy basement. The backs of the steps were open and I always ran up them so that no one could grab my ankles. There was never anyone there but it always felt like someone was going to grab.

Which scene was your favorite?

I can't say it would spoil some of the ending.

Any additional comments?

If you don't like long books then don't get this one. Don't give negative reviews on the length it clearly stated TWENTY EIGHT HOURS! LOVE IT! To me this was a bargain, good story, good voice to read to me, and I didn't guess the end. I loved every minute of it.

Intriguing

there are multiple subplots that will keep you intrigued. there's so much action you may find yourself talking out loud to the characters!
2 things I didn't like was 1/2 way through when the main characters are in the lobby of a hotel and while everything else is happening (shooting) they are imagining being WITH each other. Also, the second part of the book when the the female lead keeps crying and blaming herself... every 5 minutes. Overall it's a really good book and worth it.

Formulaic Fodder

Enter the tortured but beautiful heroine who falls madly into lust with an equally handsome and horny hero. Add hot sex scenes to break the monotony of a predictable story of mayhem against women and you have this book. The saving grace was Hillary Hubert, the narrator. Books by Karen Rose are off of my list.

This will be the only Karen Rose book I "read"

I would have given this one star but I did finish it because the plot pulled me through wanted to know "who done it". But the love interest subplot, that some mystery writers apparently consider necessary, was just awful. And there was so much of it! Trust me, as a child of the 60s I am no prude but it was couple was unbelievable and not one bit sexy. Just boring. Most of the story takes place over the course of 2-3 days. The protagonists meet early on day one and by the end of day two they are considering spending the rest of their lives together. I could buy "love at first sight" story if the author had been able to create some electricity between the two, but she did not. I ended up just skipped those scenes which is annoying in a mystery as you are afraid you'll miss a clue. Many years ago I was in NYC on business and eating dinner alone in a fancy restaurant. Unbeknownst to me, a romance writers conference was in town and 6-8 of them sat at the next table. They were dissing romance writers who were not there, drinking and laughing at poorly written sex scenes including such characters as "Flaming Tina". This book would have made their list. If you want a romance you might like this. P.S. This is the worst review I've ever given a book. If I don't like it I usually don't finish it and think its unfair to rate the book. This one drove me so crazy I needed to tell someone!

Longer Than You Think....

Unfortunately what could've been a good thriller with a halfway decent story line turned out to be way ,way longer than it needed to be with wordy side scenes that were not necessary to the plot. In typical romance novel formula, the main characters are ultimately attracted to one another, but the frequent, descriptive sex scenes were not necessary to plot development, and in fact were highly inappropriate given the situation being depicted. I found the wrap up to be pretty far fetched and unbelievable.

The abridgment will need an abridgment

What disappointed you about Closer Than You Think?

Even the best of the best of books doesn't deserve to be this long. Every single scene was drawn out to the point of exasperation. It took for-freaking-ever for each step of this story to unfold. I eventually gave up because I didn't feel like listening to hours of gas for one nugget of something interesting!!! Even the abridged version would need to be abridged! Also, I'm sorry, but the romance-y garbage just gets in the way of what could be a decent story line.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something not written by Karen Rose.

Which scene was your favorite?

Whatever scene I was on when I decided to pull the plug on this title.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Closer Than You Think?

Probably 80% of the book!

Excellent book just a touch too long

Karen Rose is one of my "must buy" authors and this story did not disappoint. I was concerned when I saw how long it was but I never grew bored or tired of listening. There were plenty of twists and turns to fill the time. Still I felt it could have been an even better book with a bit of trimming. By the time I was at hour 22 I was ready to head into the climax but knew I had 3 or 4 more hours to get to that point. I would also agree with another reviewer that some of the physical attraction seemed inappropriate for the circumstances at times. Hillary Huber did a good job but nothing outstanding. There were also more than the usual number of edits where the audio did not match well between the takes which is always a bit jarring.
