Publisher's summary

For Logan Anderson, moving on from a traumatic past means moving back to his hometown of Castle Rock, Colorado, to start a personal-security business with his brothers. But it's not long before Logan runs into Grace Mason, his best friend from high school...and the woman who never answered his letters during his Army years.

Grace was pleasantly surprised to see Logan return to Castle Rock, despite their falling-out ten years ago. Everyone always assumed they would end up together, including Grace, who had eyes only for him. But as Logan eventually escaped their town, Grace got pulled further into her family's controlling grasp - and farther away from the man she loved.

Now, united by scars both visible and not, the two must fight to free Grace from the suffocating hold of her family. But the Masons won't let go easily - and they'll do whatever it takes to keep the couple apart.

More like, Saving Grace

So the synopsis doesn't give much away about what this story is really about. Grace and Logan were best friends in high school. Right before he goes to the military he confesses that he wants to be more than friends. They promise to write each other but that doesn't happen. 10 years later, they reunite. While it is a second chance romance, it is very much so about a young woman trying to escape an abusive home situation. I did not expect the story that I got. It was nice to see them finally be happy together. However, I was terrified for Grace for most of the book. She didn't have a life of her own. For all of the other reviewers saying she was a weak character, you have to realize that she had been manipulated and mistreated her whole life. While her abuse was not physical, it wrecked havoc on her self esteem. In the end was happy to see Grace find herself.

Love It!!!!!

I really enjoyed listening and reading this story. It was really good from start to finish. I really liked The suspense it had about the Mason parents. It had me really emotional, but I still loved everything about this story.

Redeemed in the end.

I have been looking for a new author and thought I would try S.Stoker for the first time. I will give credit where it is due. The story was easy to follow and while there is an HEA, I almost did not make it to the end. It is well written and an over all decent story. *SPOILER ALERT* The subject matter is sensitive and Stoker did NOT do it justice. In more than one way the physical abuse suffered by the brothers was minimized. There was a constant comparison as if because bruises heal then the abuse can be forgotten. She follows up the blatant minimization with a character saying "there's abuse, and then there is abuse" as if some how only one the matters. The brothers are reconnecting due to the murder of their father by their abusive mother and her subsequent suicide. I believe a little more research could have been done to not piss off readers who have first hand knowledge of abuse. The story took a left turn at having the reader believe that the story is about the struggles of men coming to grips with their past and creating a life for themselves free of the oppression of a violent and abusive mother. Instead, it shifts to a man realizing that his abuse was just physical and nothing compared to the emotionally abused damsel in distress. I believe an opportunity was missed to address make victims of domestic violence without losing the story. Despite the recovery and strong finish, I will not be purchasing the 2nd book in the series.

1st of 4 Book Series...

I loved the book, the author, and the narrator. I've learned that it's part of a four book series, so I look forward to reading them.

Not for me

the story was unbelievable imo. I won't listen to the next in the series. maybe I'm listening to to many romances because they are all the same.

Gets a 4 star just for being Stoker's book

Okay, I've read and enjoyed all of Susan Stoker's series, and applaud her willingness to try a different formula. A bit darker.

As another reviewer remarked, there are plenty of plot holes that should have been addressed during the final draft process. The believability that we as readers suspend to allow for "insta love" and legal matters to dissolve with a flick of a pen are normal. But some plot holes are just holes.

What the characters go through as children definitely impact their adulthood. That being said, it is really hard to like the female lead.

As for this narrator in the audio book, she reads well and keeps the listener engaged, but the attempt to do a male voice is just sad. Logan's brother's voices are particularly feminine and awkward.

This author never disappoints

Another winner from Stoker and a great narration. I didn't love this one as much as some of her others, but still decent and worth the time. Will listen to the next one.
