This is a well written story that could easily be made into a movie. What really got me was the way the Narrator brought the story and Characters to life any time someone spoke you knew who it was so I will be looking for more audio books narrated by Kimberly Jajuan. Great Listen.

I've read this book a hand full of times & it never gets old. Each time I read or listen, I catch something I've never caught before. I love the detail EJD puts in his book.

I listened EJD's The Blackbirds before this one and now it makes sense about Destiny Jones' past; lost a little respect in her father Keith. Was also surprised that the landlord Juanita was the same one from EJD's book Liar's Game, and that the baby Kwanzaa in Liar's Game was the grown woman Kwanzaa Browne in The Blackbirds.
This book had so many twist to it, found myself surprised at how they all came together. EJD's books always end poorly to me, probably because he's planning a sequel, but it was a pretty good book overall.
However, the narrator should retire from being a voice actor. Her character voices were just bad, and she stumbled over so many words like she has a thick tongue or is a recovering lisp-er. Either the audio publisher was too cheap to hire a better actor, or it's her own company.

***Possible story spoilers***
There are things about this story that I loved. The majority of the book was fast paced and kept me on my toes. I felt that much of this story is relateable. How often re-bound relationships go up in smoke, people make choices based on finances rather than the heart and someone always gets hurt. At the end of the day money talks and many bitter ex???s will stop at nothing to get what they want. The ex was easy to hate (as a woman and a mother) and the father was hard to feel sorry for. And what happened on the streets with Destiny???well who hasn???t been hurt and wanted revenge? The saddest part in the story is how the parents left their child to deal with life by herself. Her mother only wanted her child for what she could give her and the father, while he thought he was a great father; seemed very self centered and unaware. The way Destiny???s character was written she seemed very childish but easily flipped on her evil side when she was back stabbed. Towards the end the story started to drag for me but I like knowing in the end that some people got what they deserved for the hurt they inflicted. That you have to be accountable for your actions and I was happy to see Billie not back down to Keith. He was doing his child more harm by not making her face the consequences she created otherwise how will she ever break the cycle her mother???s family taught her and learn better ways to handle her problems.
I wish all the overlapping story lines were tied up a little more but overall I left this story knowing Billie would survive and thrive and that Keith and his family would suffer the consequences they deserved from their actions. Keith may not have done anything terrible but he didn't man up for his choices. You can't be sad when you life goes sideways and you sat by and did nothing. And how did he have no clue about his wife's family? He should have expected some of what happened after being around the family for all those years. So if he was clueless due to his own inadequacies then he deserved what he got. Anyway, my point is that this story felt pretty real and when I finished I had feelings and thoughts on what happened to each person in the story because the author made me think and feel. And in my eyes that's a story worth listening to.
