Don't ask. Don't tell. Stay alive.

A member of the elite Hawk force that protects the City of Elantra, Kaylin Neya has sacrificed much to earn the respect of the winged Aerians and immortal Barrani she works alongside. But the mean streets she escaped as a child aren't the ones she's vowed to give her life guarding. Those were much darker….

Kaylin's moved on with her life—and is keeping silent about the shameful things she's done to stay alive. But when the city's oracles warn of brewing unrest in the outer fiefdoms, a mysterious visitor from Kaylin's past casts her under a cloud of suspicion. Thankfully, if she's anything, she's a survivor….

Language is very disappointing!

This series has been great up until this book! I'm sad to say that the introduction of a character from Kaylin's past disrupted a great story with awful language. Some language can be tolerable if the story is really good, but the F-word is most definately not! I have already purchased the next couple of books in this series & I am afraid to find more disappointment. The character Morse says the F-word almost everytime she's introduced in the storyline. It's very sad to find a great author & then find that they turn to such inappropriate language in their books as they become well known.

I liked this narrator, Khristine Hvam, very much & was disappointed to hear her use such language. I search for books by narrator to attempt to avoid the books I find inappropriate & of course because of their talent. So, this really was a great disappointment. She's really a very talented narrator.

Never disappoint!

It's a great story and it explains so much of some passages on the previous books. I read some reviews where it was said that there were holes in the plot line but I believe that if not intentional (as cliff hangers) this book covers a lot of the "unexplained things", specially regarding her 6 month absence between the fifs and the hawks. Get it! You won't be sorry! I can't wait to hear the next one. I could probably read it because they are available in print but it won't be the same as Khristine Hvam brings so much to the plate and delivery of the story.. so I will patiently wait (sighs)..

It’s time I admit to myself that I love these stories!

I was intrigued a decade ago when I first discovered Michelle Sagara’s flights of fantasy. However, life has a habit of interference in my spare time, until recently. I’ve been binging the series, in order from the first book, over the last year. A good portion of my daily routine is now consumed happily in listening to these quality stories, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next, and the next, etc.
Thank you to the author and the narrator for making this trip so enjoyable.

Great book!

I really like this series. I enjoy the characters a lot- they're well written. This book sheds some light on what happened to Kaylin after she left Nightshade. Hvam does a great job, she's become one of my favorite narrators.

another winner

great story line, an extremely charming and a bit exasperating heroine, and a FABULOUS narrator make this story ( and those before in the series) very enjoyable.

A Different Perspective

I know that this review is several years past the books prime, however, people are always checking review and it seemed beneficial to add a comment for anyone considering this series that might be new to Audible.

No one wants their closet skeletons to be put on display and visiting one's past is often uncomfortable. There is not a person alive that has not made errors in judgement in their youth, the difference is by matters of degree of severity and how impactful those decisions are on the adult person you become.

Kaylin's flight from the Fife of Nightshade to the Fife of Barren is the chapter in her life where Kaylin decides what type of adult she wants to be. The story is full of ugliness, foul language, and horrific acts of violence done by a child. However, the other reviews that harp on the level of dismay and disgust that the story depicts may not fully appreciate that this is a rite of passage that defines Kaylin.

The writing is excellent, the narration is perfect, the story is gritty, sad, violent, and the perfect chapter for this part of Kaylin's story. It does contain a good bit of foul language, but I believe that the author's use of the violence and language is fitting for this portion of the story related to Kaylin. The background information reveled about Kaylin's journey, is well worth learning.

Kaylin Walks the long road

What made the experience of listening to Cast in Silence the most enjoyable?

Khristine Hvam's voices. Over the course of the series, her's has become the voices I hear even when turning the pages of the books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It is a close race between Marcus, Evanton, and the Archon. What can I say? I love the difficult ones.

But Clint has a special place in my heart. He teases, he indulges, he cares. I wish he had a much bigger role, but then he would be hurt or stressed or in danger. He is sweet. so I want him to remain Kaylin's good friend with the Wonderful Voice and the silky soft feathers that he knows she is going to touch because she just HAS to.

What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

having read the books first, I know that her acting (dramatization), subtle though it is, is the shining star that made me hoard away each book as soon as it becomes available for purchase. I listen to the stories repeatedly ( my favorites are also favorite re-reads/re-listens).

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just total absorption. I didn't want to go to work and interrupt the story. I wanted to hurry home and continue the story.

My Favorite of this Series

I have read this series countless times and love it! As I went through this time, it occurred to me that book by, cast in silence is probably my favorite! Justice is done, great things happen to some of my favorite characters and it’s just overall powerful. Cristine is a fabulous reader, as always! And now I’m going back to finish, rereading the rest of the series. Happy summer!

I wish I brought my time Travers clock

This books is possibly the weakness in the series. It jumps around in time a lot and has many and long flash backs. Iit provides a great deal of back-story and fills in details of some the more prominent side characters and the past that brought our favourite Hawk to the attention of the Lord of Hawks. The pace is slower but it is interesting and does explain a number of things about the city and the immortals. I enjoy this book and book 6 really picks up the pace.
