Publisher's summary

The 1960s were full of hippies, hitchhiking, drugs, and war. Carson Chance, a 24-year-old Vietnam War veteran, returns home to Dallas without a college degree and with an injured leg. By chance, he is offered a position at a small private investigating company.

His life is interrupted when he is cruising on his motorcycle on the interstate and stops to pick up a ravishing brunette looking for a ride. Amy Warren is younger than she looks and tugs at Carson's heart when he finds she has run a-way from home. He offers her a place to sleep for the night but she is determined not to leave and becomes his roommate; Amy fuels the fire that burns within him and the sparks begin to fly. The arrangement works for a while until Carson decides to investigate her past, uncovering a mask of lies and deception. Wanted for murdering her stepfather, she is a fugitive from the law.

The story takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride through several years of their traumatic relationship, where two dysfunctional people try to survive during a dysfunctional time. They were like two pages ripped from the same book, only he doesn't know it.

Any additional comments?

I listened to the Audible version of this.It was well written and just a good story.Teri Schnaubelt does a wonderful job narrating this book.Set in the Vietnam war era,Carson picks up a hitchhiker named Amy.Amy ends up staying the night at Carsons, then a little longer. She is not quite truthful which leads to a few adventures.Carson, ex military and Amy,fresh faced teen, will they connect and make it thru life together or not?

Loved it to the end.

Would you consider the audio edition of Carson Chance, P. I. to be better than the print version?

I really enjoyed the novel, but the audio edition really brought the characters to life. Teri Schnaubelt does a great job with both male and female roles.

What did you like best about this story?

Two lonely people, Carson and Amy meet up by fate and manage to fill a gap in each others lives. Then they are torn apart and meet up again several years later as Amy, now a motorcycle cop, reenters his life. Both damaged from tormented pasts, they play a cat and mouse game, trying their hardest to live without the other. The romance is like a ribbon that wraps around the lives of several people and pulls them together. Ms. Brown created strong characters and an interesting twist to this romantic suspense and I loved it.

What does Teri Schnaubelt bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great narration on Mrs. Schnaubelt's part. Has a wonderful voice for narration and does an incredible acting job. She brings the story and characters to life. I'm a real fan of hers.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely.

DID NOT WANT IT TO END

I absolutely loved this book. Two damaged people, a teenage runaway and a Vietnam veteran, meet and go on a journey spanning several years to find themselves and each other. Carson and Amy are such likable, wonderful, and amazing characters. This story has it all~romance, heartache, addiction, a cat named Amy (or Cat), and even the Mafia. I laughed, cried, and thouroughly enjoyed every minute of this audiobook. Teri Schnaubelt's narration is just amazing. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...

Take a chance on Carson Chance

Where does Carson Chance, P. I. rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Carson Chance P. I. is one of the best audiobooks I've heard for two important reasons. The story is well told and built around two fascinating characters that bring the novel to life. Secondly, the narrator has the talent and ability to interpret those characters and bring the audiobook to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Amy. She is on the run. She doesn’t want to be found. The law wants to convict Amy of murder. But is she guilty? Carson Chance is determined to battle all odds to prove her innocence and does. She may be the missing piece in his life. Carson is passionately in love with her. But Amy walks away from his life, and his memories of her only become entangled in his own nightmares. Carson Chance may be the protagonist, and he is a good one. But Amy is the driving force in what he does and why he does it.

What about Teri Schnaubelt’s performance did you like?

Teri Schnaubelt did not merely read the story, nor did she simply narrate it. She crawled inside the mind and soul of the characters, gave them flesh and blood, and brought them to life as surely as if they walked in the real world.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Distance has separated Carson and Amy. But can it keep them apart? Will they ever have a lasting relationship? Or will the Mafia drive a wedge between them forever? Will death end all chances for love to ever find them and keep them together? This is the suspense and conflict, the moments, that tell a harrowing tale and is the stuff of unforgettable novels

Any additional comments?

Author N. E. Brown understands people. She knows how to write the pain and frustration of a wayward love that is always just beyond the grasp or a tormented young man. She works the beauty of romance into the midst of an intense and solid mystery.

Good Book A Bit Scattered - Great Narration

Any additional comments?

Carson had everything stacked against him. When his parents died he and his brother were shipped off to separate relatives. His brother ended up with a rich aunt in Highland Park and Carson ended up on the wrong side of the tracks with a relative who only took him in for the meager stipend received for caring for him.

After finishing high school Carson saw his only option was to enlist and he was sent to Vietnam. There he received a serious injury, sending him home to have his leg reconstructed and rehabilitated. While his brother tried to help, Carson withdrew even more. Upon release from the hospital (unbeknownst to Carson, with his brothers help) he got a job as a Private Investigator.

One day while driving his Mustang down the highway he sees a young girl hitch hiking. She looks so vulnerable and he stops to give her a ride - as he know he is trustworthy. That's where the story really begins.

Amy is three months shy of 18 years old and she has had a rough time of it as well. Considerably older, Carson refuses to get involved with her. But she won't relent.

The relationship begins - it is continuous push and pull, running away and coming back, mysteries, danger and, of course, romance.

There was a lot going on and I was a bit confused at times. With a few nit picky details ( did they have fax machines in 1970's) overall this was a good book.

Teri is excellent as always. I've listened to several of her performances and she is the real deal, a serious professional.

Note: Strong language and some really generalized mature scenes-very mild. HOWEVER, some violence and childhood abuse including molestation is addressed.

I received a complimentary copy of this recording in exchange for my thoughts and opinions. I have done my best to summarize these in this review. If you found it helpful, would you take a moment and select 'yes' below this review. Thank you!

We all knew a Carson sometime in our life

What made the experience of listening to Carson Chance, P. I. the most enjoyable?

The narration was great. I loved the characters in this story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Carson because he is the broken man that we all want to fix and he sounds like he's gorgeous.

What about Teri Schnaubelt’s performance did you like?

She has a very distinct voice. She does a great job and going between male and female voices just enough that it is noticeable but not weird.

Any additional comments?

I really liked the characters, Carson is a veteran and Private investigator which leads to interesting side stories and Amy is a younger girl/woman with lots of baggage. I also liked the brother separated at a young age story line. The best part for me was the friendship between Amy and her landlord "President" Jefferson.
