The first novel in a new historical romance series from Kelly Bowen.
Welcome to a world of reckless sensuality and glittering sophistication, of dangerously handsome gentlemen and young ladies longing to gain a title, of games played for high stakes, including - on occasion - a lady's virtue. A marquess's sheltered only daughter, Lady Roberta St. Giles, falls in love with a man she glimpses across a crowded ballroom: a duke, a game player of consummate skill, a notorious rakehell who shows no interest in marriage, until he lays eyes on Roberta.
A decade ago, the Marquess of Bourne was cast from society with nothing but his title. Now a partner in London's most exclusive gaming hell, the cold, ruthless Bourne will do whatever it takes to regain his inheritance - including marrying perfect, proper Lady Penelope Marbury. A broken engagement and years of disappointing courtships have left Penelope with little interest in a quiet, comfortable marriage, and a longing for something more. How lucky that her new husband has access to an unexplored world of pleasures.
Honoria Smythe-Smith is: A) a really bad violinist; B) still miffed at being nicknamed "Bug" as a child; C) not in love with her older brother's best friend, D) all of the above.
When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn't saving her from ruin. It's filled with it.
Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband...someday.
Lady Madeline Matthews would rather shame herself than sacrifice her freedom - which is why, to avoid a marriage to an aging, lecherous lord, she seeks out the company of Logan Scott. A torrid affair with the notorious womanizer would surely condemn her in the eyes of good society. Though a legend in the bedchamber, Logan is, in truth, an intensely private man tormented by past betrayals. Now a forward little minx is disrupting his life with her vibrant charm and unspoiled beauty, a high-spirited enchantress completely at sea in London’s sophisticated whirl. But when what begins with a kiss threatens to blossom into something more rapturous and real, will Logan and Madeline have the courage to drop the masks they hide behind in the name of love?
The characters are typical Kleypas: likeable, enagaging, well-developed. However, the conflict between the hero and heroine picks up too strongly in the second half of the book and goes on for too long. I kept waiting for the negative tension to be addressed and resolved but it kept going and going. The nature of the conflict is also pretty cringe-worthy and a little heartbreaking.
Despite this, I don't regret spending my credit on this book. The rich characters and unpredictable plot is (eventually) rewarding.

What a romantic story. I lost myself in it. Once I finished the book my hand accidentally pressed a button and "here without you" began playing on my iPhone. It was a great ending to a completely fulfilling listening experience. Another winner! Thank you Lisa for adding color to my life.

This is one of the worst books I have listened to in a long time! Although I ordinarily love Rosalyn Landor, I was not very impressed with the narration even from the beginning. By the time I had heard Lady Madeline go on and on about her insecurities for the 10th time I was ready to jump out of a window! I don't ordinarily like to write negative reviews because doubtless someone out there will or probably does love this book, and I totally respect that. However, I found this book to be terribly boring, predictable and repetitive, I could not even finish listening to it. I listened about 3/4 of the way and gave up for hopes of something better.
Madeline is very young, 18 fresh out of the schoolroom and promised to be married to an old man (sound familiar). She decides the best way to solve her problem is to have an affair with the most popular current stage performer, Logan Scott. Logan won't allow himself to fall in love but ultimately gives in to the beautiful Maddie (again, familiar). I like several of Lisa Kleypas' books and think she is amazingly talented. She has a strong ability to create detailed characters with true heartfelt problems, not to mention her ability to write a steamy love scene. Although, she must have been having a rough month (I highly doubt it took her longer than that) when writing this book because it comes nowhere close to the talents displayed in books such as "Stranger in my arms" or the "Wallflower" series. If you want to take the chance and like the book, great and I'm very happy for you. Those of you with histories like mine, skip it and go onto something better.

This is the second book in the Capitol Theatre Series and it is better than the first. I liked the characters better. They were more fleshed out than the characters in the first book and the heroine, "Maddy", is more likable than Julia, the heroine in the first book. This book is a good stand alone book even though it is a part of a series. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good romance story that causes laughter and tears - and a huge sigh of contentment at the end of the book.

The voices she does and how she can use the grammar so well!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I love Lisa Kelypas and although this book has a good story (although somewhat implausible) and has some nice surprises, That said, I hated the character of Logan Scott so much that it basically ruined the story for me. I don't care how scarred he is, he is just so terrible to poor Madelyn that I can't imagine anyone having the patience not to tell him where to go. (At times I had a hard time listening without screaming at Madelyn to stand up for herself!) Worth a listen, but beware the ass masquerading as the hero.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The older actress who takes Madelyn in.
What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Rosalyn Landor! She makes all the books she reads so interesting!!! I love how she can do both male and female voices that are completely convincing!!!
Was Because You're Mine worth the listening time?
I guess so
Any additional comments?
Read the Hawthorne Series and Wallflower Series. They are both WONDERFUL!!!

Each and every book is enjoyable! Do not hesitate to purchase! Starting another right now.
I have found the authors later books to have much better developed characters. Madeline drove me crazy. If you read later series She really refines the kinds of characters she introduced in the series.
