Publisher's Summary

Bonjour, my name is André Chevalier. It has been my joy and my great honor to help those who have lost their way. Not long after I began my journey, I met two such wounded souls.

Renata Koreman, my little mouse. She came to me as a child - shy, mute, injured...broken. It took oh-so many years to start to bring her back to herself! Yet, I could not fully heal her.

Years later, Grant Wilkinson, he too fell into my hands. The ex-Army Ranger was badly disfigured and saw himself as a monster. Isolated by secrets, solitary and self-contained, his colleagues affectionately named him "Frosty". Yet, how should one behave when besieged by a lifetime of confusion and guilt?

The moment I saw him, I thought of her and I wondered. The eyes, they cannot always see clearly. And the heart? Ah, the heart can only guess at the truth. So it was that I remained uncertain.

Could the mouse and the monster heal each other?

Abuse

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would. It is a story that I think is well written and worth giving a listen to.

Any additional comments?

The storyline was good and I enjoyed listening to it, but it's not really a story for me. I know it's one that will be enjoyed by plenty of other fabulous listeners!

Intensely Emotional!

I was hooked by this intensely emotional audiobook from the beginning. It is an incredible story of the painful and long-lasting effects of childhood abuse, both sexual and physical. Led by a brilliant, caring, quirky psychologist, two individuals learn to overcome the past, including the feelings of guilt and responsibility that abusers instill in their victims. The book was thought-provoking and occasionally heart-breaking, and I couldn't help wanting Grant and Renata to find a brighter future. But, they can't escape the ramifications of their own actions, and just when things are looking up, the past comes back. My only disappointment is that this was not a stand-alone book, so the story is incomplete and ends on a cliff-hanger. Neither the book title nor the description make this evident. The reader/purchaser should be told this upfront. That's why I knocked off one star from the overall rating.

The narration was excellent, with Mr. Scarlato providing distinct voices for the different characters. The delivery was natural and well-paced.

Intense

Loved this listen! An intense and complex story with great characters, with plenty of unexpected humor. Does have dark subject matter, most of the characters are dealing with past abuse and are healing. Fantastic narrator who made each character unique. Highly recommend and will be looking into reading/listening to the other books in the series. I received a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

WOW, that was intense

Pretty intense and emotional listen, but I must say very enlightening in understanding her the abused victim feels and why.
The narrator did a great job, but it would have been ideal to have a female voice for a bigger impact to the whole storyline.

Layered

I’ve never been disappointed by Nikki Sex. She is a wonderful author that explores topics in a way that I love. This book explores topics of abuse, depression, guilt, societal norms, and so much more. She’s able to layer these topics into the story in such a way that you don’t feel like someone is shoving something down your throat, rather she’s just telling us each characters truth.

I can be very picky when it comes to narrators doing both male and female voices, put accents on top of that and I frequently roll my eyes. NOT this time! Roberto Scarlato has a clear voice that pulls you into the story. He is able to keep characters separate without over doing it. His accents were delightful and really brought Andre to life. I’ve read many of Nikki’s books and I was happy to finally hear him come alive!

I received this book for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. I was so happy with it that I’ve already purchased the second book!

Difficult topic beautifully written

Speaking about abuse is never easy and when it's one of the major factors in a book I wonder if it will be handled well, in this case it is. It's hard to listen to, but it's also an important topic to acknowledge and to be aware of and this book covers it with care and compassion without shying away.

The characters are beautifully complex, damaged yet resilient, full or sorrow and hope.

It's also worth noting that there is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, so you may want to have book two ready to go.

The narration is excellent, clear character voices, good accents and a delivery that was easy to listen to.

Great Series Starter

Abuse of any kind is always a difficult topic to approach. Although Renata and Grant are the abuse victims, Andre, their unconventional psychologist, was the real star in this story. Will he heal them or will Renata and Grant heal each other?

Heart-wrenching, dark and emotional, this was a story that immediately gripped me. I was feeling invested in the characters and was eager for resolution, so the cliffhanger was a bit of a drawback. Their story had me reflecting on the world that exists today and the many lives that are shattered by abuse in all its forms. The narration was well done and added to my enjoyment. I look forward to the next book in the series and I would recommend Abuse.

Nikki’s stories are alway unusual

Nikki’s stories are alway unusual; this one is no exception. Nikki’s books are lessons in sexual freedom and sexual healing. There is a lot to be learned from her characters, particularly Andre’s wisdom. However, sometimes her characters “lectures” can get a bit preachy---Lady Diana in this case.

This was an interesting story with interesting characters. Unfortunately it is the first of a trilogy, so no conclusive ending. We really only just begin to get to know the main characters, and, of course, get hooked into the plot. I certainly do prefer stand alone novels. I see that the next in the trilogy has just become available on Audible. The print version is not economically available in Canada!

I like this narrator; the narration works for me and fits the characters very well.
