Publisher's summary

Despite his highly successful marketing career, Craig Williams' personal life is falling apart. The puppy he's surrendering to the local shelter is one sign of how messed up things have gotten due to a recent divorce plus the loss of a child. He thinks he'd best focus on his two surviving kids.

When Craig shows up to Megan Anderson's no-kill animal shelter, the confrontation that ensues sets them on a path neither could have predicted. As they begin spending time together, Megan starts to wonder if Craig's baggage is too much. But soon she'll have to make a choice that could bind them together forever...or drive them further apart than the day they met.

Sweet romance story

This book doesn't have a huge plot line, but is a simple sweet story. It's a nice break from my thriller books.

MEH!

I really wanted to love this story, especially since it was recommended by a friend. After all, it’s about animals and what could be better than that, right? I was, however, pretty bored and had to skip to the end to get through it. No characters grabbing my attention, especially not the male lead. I like good romance and great people who you want to be friends with in a place you want to live. This story had none of that. I won’t be reading book 2.

Almost a hit

As a dog lover, I appreciate the storyline. But (and you knew there would be one) there were some oddities that just cried out for better editing; i.e. in one place our heroine says she doesn't eat bacon, but in another scene she happily chows down on it. A small thing, maybe, but it's a good example of the "oops!" issues that are prevalent. And there are several.

**SPOILER ALERT!!**

Probably my biggest eye-rolling plot problem is that our large-hearted heroine believes the hero's barely teenage daughter when she offhandedly says that her father had a vasectomy. (Srsly??) So of course when our heroine and the hero engage in the sexy times, she doesn't insist on protection. (Facepalm.) So now you know the overwhelming plot point.

There is generally a built-in belief suspension in most books, but this one comes with extra baggage. Plus, as the proud and loving owner of both purpose-bred dogs from ethical breeders and shelter saves, I really didn't appreciate the shaming of the former.

Love your pet(s). How you came together is far, far less important than how you care for your friend.
