Publisher's summary

From Amazon Number 1 best-selling author, David F. Berens. Back from his tour in Afghanistan, Troy Clint Bodean had everything he needed for some peace and quiet: a good fishing pole, a pickup truck, and a beach house on a small island in South Carolina. All was right with the world - until he found the hat. It was a straw cowboy hat with a peacock feather stuck in the band and it looked good on him, really good. That's when everyone started trying to kill him, and he had no idea why. Hold on to your hat! Suspenseful, gripping, and fast-paced, Hat Check - the first Troy Bodean Adventure - follows Troy trying desperately to stay alive and figure out why everyone is out to get him. Readers of Carl Hiaasen, Randy Wayne White, and Tim Dorsey will love the island feel and snappy humor of Hat Check.

Well, this was fun!

I mean, you can't take the story seriously, but I don't think that's the intention, at all. It's entertaining, and with lots of action: people keeps getting kidnapped and maimed in the most creative ways, there is a case of mistaken paternity and a childbirth; a missing 7 million dollars cashier check and a found cowboy hat.

Sure, it has some inaccuracies, some stereotypes and some scenes are over the top, but if you are looking for an enjoyable read, and you're not thrown off by a baddy getting reiteratedly maimed, you'll enjoy it.

Theo Holland narration was very good.

HAT CHECK....A REALITY CHECK FOR TROY CLINT BODEAN

My first experience with the work of David F. Berens has been thoroughly entertaining. Our star, Troy Bodean, is a good ole boy who can and does find himself in some sticky and hilarious situations on a small South Carolina coastal island while trying to find himself some peace and quiet. Yet Troy turns into a target while having no clue why. Well, young women, boats, booze, large amounts of unclaimed money, and suspense keep Troy and his readers snagged like fishing offshore with your nets, poles and hooks. This story is a guaranteed chuckle-packed, quick moving clever book. Buy it, enjoy it, and get ready for the next Berens clever tropical thriller. One of the true hero in this tale is our reader/voice actor, Theo Holland. He is a true master of his vocal range, and he definitely improves this entertaining story!

Laugh until the tears run

A new opportunity in Troy Bodean’s life enables him to live the life of a beach bum, well, more or less. His good looks, inability to stay out of trouble and the sexy blonde chick who has recently sent him “interested” vibes turn his world upside down. His landlord has been recently found murdered, his discovery that his (Ms. Right) ex-girlfriend lives up the hill is just the beginning of his bad luck. His finding and rescuing a cowboy hat with a peacock feather in it is a sign of his luck changing … uh, no!

The hat holds the key to murder, intrigue and two very rude illiterate Australian hitmen sent to recover the mystery the hat holds. There are a slew of other characters that bring the listener to near tears of laughter – Chesney, the twin pole dancing blondes, the two Australian hit-men, and the ice cream truck guy.

An interesting and highly entertaining murder thriller with engaging characters that keep the action moving. David Berens has written an action-packed thriller that keeps the listener’s attention. In places, it is highly amusing while in others it is extremely dark. This is a good book, but one that has some highly violent scenes. I’m not sure I believed the two hit-men; they were a bit flakier than I would have imagined.

The characters are well-developed with realistic dialog throughout the book. Lots of moving pieces that come together, although I thought Bodean could have been developed slightly more. There were places where he did not seem the main character or he took too many steps back into the background.

The narrator, Theo Holland, has a talented voice that helped draw the listener in and added a bit of flair to the story. I enjoyed the voices he used for each character. He did a good solid job of narration, I enjoyed his voice.

I had no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.

A Really Good Audio Book

This is a very entertaining story! Many of the characters are a bit on the shady side, down on their luck, or just plain criminal. Honestly, some aren't very likeable. But the story has lots of humor. It has lots of action. Be warned, there is quite a bit of foul language. I could picture the scenes happening in my mind while I was listening. It was addictive. The narrator did a great job with all the different character voices!

Enjoyed Story

The story was really good. A few twists and turns and interesting plot and well developed characters. The narration however was terrible. Theo Holland read word for word without enthusiasm or passion in his voice. I almost returned the book because I was having trouble dealing with his narration. However, the story line got me and i decided to tough it out.

Good first book for series

Rogue Wave is a very entertaining read with some good characters. The main character Ryan Bodean has just the right amount of manliness & swagger yet has humorous qualities too. Not one of the usual over the top “hero’s” who can perform amazing feats yet never gets hurt.
The narrator is not the best but still makes the story enjoyable. I will be reading more of the Ryan Bodean series. I have already read the available kindle books of the Troy Bodean series, Ryan Bodean’s brother, and those are very good. Check them out

Fun, Rollicking Adventure Made Better by Narration

Hat Check is the first story in a Series featuring beach adventure Troy Beaudine. The book reminded me a lot of the film “it’s a mad mad mad mad world”.
