Publisher's summary

The Resistance is fractured. The remaining survivors are buckling under the might of the malicious Tyrant King. Enter Roark von Graf, hedge mage, lesser noble of Traisbin, and one of the last freedom fighters. Desperate and unhinged, Roark crafts one final attempt to overthrow the king. The plan goes awry, and Roark finds himself tumbling headfirst into an interdimensional portal. On the other side, he finds himself stranded in an unexpected place - an ultra-immersive fantasy video game called Hearthworld. Worse yet, he's taken the form of a low-level troll. Luckily, Roark managed to grab a powerful magic artifact that could defeat the king. It might not be game over after all.

Dungeon Masters James Hunter and eden Hudson form an alliance with Audie award winner Nick Podehl and invite you to gear up with this new series. Get ready to level up, because this time the game is real.

About the Author

James A. Hunter is a man of many talents. A retired Marine Corps Sergeant, combat veteran, and pirate hunter (seriously). He's also a member of the Royal Order of the Shellback. In addition to all of that, James Hunter has also been a missionary and international aid worker in Bangkok, Thailand. His latest mission? Taking care of his two kids and writing full time.

About the Author

eden has a fondness for characters you wouldn't want to be friends with: jerks, cheaters, lunatics, sleazebags, and cowards all find their voice in her often twisted and bizarre stories. Influenced by the writings of Stephen King and Douglas Adams, her stories often involve swords, guns, or magic. She is the author of the Redneck Apocalypse series and the Jubal Van Zandt series.

About the Performer

Audie Award-winning narrator Nick Podehl has performed in more than 300 Audible titles, touching upon everything from horror to young adult, but fantasy fans will recognize him as the voice of the beloved Kingkiller series. He has also lent his voice to some iconic works of teen fiction—including Wonder and Will Grayson, Will Grayson. In addition to his audiobook work, he has lent his voice to videogames, movies, commercials, and alternative media.

Not A Dungeon Born Clone

If that’s what you were worried about...because I was

It’s actually a very unique premise: guy in a fantasy world screws up a teleportation spell and finds himself as an enemy NPC in a video game. Not that he even knows what a video game is. And then he proceeds to farm the players for THEIR loot. It helps that the players are a pretty realistic representation of real gamers. Self-important, entitled assholes in other words

Found a new series to put on my short list.

This is an amazing series, Nick always does amazingly well, and this is no exception. I throughly recommend this to any fans of Nick, Fantasy, or LitRPG. This is also a very interesting take on LitRPG, it's not the standard, person either gets stuck in, or just regularly plays VR. I highly suggest it. This is definitely a book that is on my top 5 as far as favorite series goes.

Entertaining

Nick Podehl's effortless story telling ability shines brightly in this entertaining, and interesting take on a LitRPG. James Hunter and Eden Hudson have managed to scribe something enjoyable and entertaining without the slighted need of a harem. I highly recommend this purchase, and I am looking forward to more.

A fun and refreshing take on the genre

Great book. The ultimate Underdog Story. but unlike most Underdog stories, this one does not just have the underdog win with the power of narrative; Roark earns each of his victories without a doubt.
The main character has a strong character grounded in a strong back story. the author doesn't fail said backstory in mystery either, he doesn't need to. Roark is smart but not Batman omniscient.
One of my favorite aspects is the way it twists the expectations of the way its main character interacts with the expectations of the genres. usually in any enter a video game style book, the main character knows all the standard practice is a video games or RPGs. Roark does not and has to figure out what stats and levels are. the other common fantasy or litrpg Trope is a character who starts off knowing nothing and grows in a Luke Skywalker esque hero's journey, this book takes a different approach from that as well. Roark is quite skilled, he just doesn't happen to be knowledgeable about all the gaming things that all the other characters in other books always seem to be knowledgeable about.
it is very fun and refreshing and quite exciting.

Great plot, writer shows potential

Great take to litrpg. There were some definite holes and stuff, but overall great. Like others mentioned, the fencing terms were annoying. He started by saying a term then describing what it was, but by the end of the book a five part attack sequemce would just be those italian words, leaving me to just guess what it means.

Nick Podehl kicked ass as usual

Better than expected

I didn't think I would be this into a Lit RPG, but I found the story to be engaging, the wit causing to laugh and gufaw at moments, and the Narrator to be Excellent at his craft.
I'll be purchasing the next in the series!

Loved it!

This was a reread for me and first time listening to the audiobook. One the first LitRPG I'd ever read and one of my favorites. Loved the narration by Nick Podehl!
