Publisher's summary

Because rivers and lakes are commonly turbid and murky, many creatures that live there are invisible to traditional wildlife film-makers. So although many people are familiar with the inhabitants of tropical reefs, and even the deep oceanic trenches, it is the water right under our noses that we know least about. And yet these creatures at the top of the freshwater food chain are every bit as spectacular—and dangerous—as those that prowl the oceans.

Man-eating catfish in the Himalayas, wandering bullsharks in the rivers of Australia, man-sized super-piranhas that snack on the dangling genitals of swimmers in the Congo: these are only a few of the freshwater leviathans Jeremy Wade encounters in River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones That Didn't Get Away, the long-awaited book adaptation of Animal Planet's all-time highest-rated show.

If you like the show, you will really enjoy this

I am a big fan of the television show River Monsters, came across this book and figured I would take a chance - glad I did, it's really good. Mr Wade goes into some background information that was just fascinating - in pursuing his passion he has gone to some of the most dangerous places on earth - contracting malaria at one point, walking away from a plane crash, being arrested as a spy just to name a few. He is a true environmentalist, bringing attention to the alarming decline of life in the earth's river systems. His narration, like on the show, is exceptional because he is able to turn a fishing trip into an interesting history lesson. Well worth the credit.

Excellent book! Jeremy Wade at his best!

I was thrilled with this book. Jeremy Wade makes it look Very Easy on TV... Here's the real story!!!
River Monsters is a fantastic tv show about World-Class Angler Jeremy Wade and the completely bizarre monstrous creature he catches around the world. This book brings a true inside look at what happens behind the scenes.
Jeremy Wade is not only an amazing angler, but he also possesses a compelling screen presence that makes the show addictive. Similarly Jeremy is a fantastic narrator! I listened to the book twice in a row.
I've always been curious about his life and how became such talented angler. The book gives us glimpses into his early life. He also gives fabulous insight into his near obsession and years of dedication to find certain fish.

If you enjoy River Monsters and Jeremy Wade

Would you consider the audio edition of River Monsters to be better than the print version?

I have the print version of this book as well, and really enjoy hearing it in the author's own voice.

What other book might you compare River Monsters to and why?

In a way it reminds me of Douglas Adams' Last Chance To See, because the author is searching out examples of what often appears to be a dying breed, fish large enough to threaten a man. Because of polution and overfishing, many of these "monsters" have become quite rare.

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Wade’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

As far as I know this is his first audio-only performance, but as he narates the River Monsters television series his voice is very familiar. He is well spoken and entertaining.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but I really enjoy his description of his life, the places he's searched out great fish, and the amazing fish themselves.

Any additional comments?

I would love to hear him narate other books, perhaps some of the books he quotes in his own work - or books by great explorers.

Honest and intriguing

I love Jeremy Wade; he's so humble and knowledgeable about fish and fisheries. When reading this, I felt like he and I were at a bar or Cafe having drinks and discussing his biggest catches. If you're a fan (or hater) of River Monsters I recommend this book. Wade really puts a lot of things into perspective about the show, his actions, and the true situation of fisheries around the world. I sincerely hope Wade puts out another book or show as his insights and efforts are truly eye-opening.

VICIOUS fishes.

This book's about very dangerous & engrossing fishing.

It's the very best (or worst) of Jeremy Wade's often deadly adventures.

I’m not a fan of fishing. I tried, but I couldn’t get past the sharp hooks, all the blood, the traumatizing... and it looked bad for the fish too. That being said, I really love this book. I enjoyed this book more than his Animal Planet program.

Jeremy Wade's heroic - a pure 'catch & release' ichthyologist working to preserve endangered species.

MONSTERS.
This book has more monsters in it than a semester of Greek Mythology.

Monster Fish:
They are grotesque in the extreme. They have thick scales and armor plates, poisonous spines, hundreds of razor sharp teeth, & sharp saw-blades in their ugly maws, some big enough to swallow a child. Their bodies are all muscle and they sometimes weigh more than Jeremy Wade.

MONSTER HUNTER
Jeremy Wade has lived a most extraordinary life.
When Jeremy’s not telling you jaw-dropping “fish stories” he’s talking about his world wide expeditions & exploits which are just as interesting as his monster fish adventures. (Sometimes more!)

Monster's Lair
He travels the world to extremely remote and impossibly exotic places. There, he'll dive into murky water filled with dangerously strange things like drowned temples, flooded forests, and monster infested water-ways filled with liquid mud.

WHERE MONSTERS DWELL
Jeremy struggles into submerged caves with huddles of monsters. He searches under rivers so dangerous it's a miracle he's not dead, or maimed. I can't imagine having to go where he goes unless it was a horrible punishment.

Like H. P. Lovecraft's weird tales in which the ancient tome called the Necronomicon is used, Jeremy reads through ancient (meaning 1948) texts (like 'Game fish of the World' ) for information on monsters (exotic game fish) written in part by infamous necromancers (fishermen-heroes like Hemingway).

Narration:
Jeremy Wade sincerely tells his own story adding to the awesome "I was there and this really happened" aspect of the book.

GOOD BOOK?
When I finished, I started listening to it again. A darn good book in my opinion.
Recommended.

Best book ever.

I love Jeremy wade and I love this book. Just great stories and good facts. Great to listen to weather you’re chilling out on a Friday or driving to work early morning on a monday. The narration is amazing especially because it’s done by the author. Makes it like watching your favourite episode of river monsters but from a completely new vantage point.

Better than the show.

Love this book. I am not remotely a fisherman by any stretch but found this book fascinating.
