Publisher's summary

A straight-shooting Silicon Valley executive reveals insider career strategies to becoming a great leader, developing your network, succeeding without wasting time, and managing trade-offs between your work and life so your life works.

Patty Azzarello became the youngest general manager at Hewlett-Packard at age 33, ran a $1 billion software business at 35, and became a CEO at 38 - all without turning into a self-centered, miserable jerk. In Rise, Azzarello shares the insider secrets to advancing your career (while having a life) in three practical steps:

  • Do better: Set ruthless priorities, and work and lead more strategically to deal with frustrating obstacles.
  • Look better: Build your credibility with the people who can help (or blacklist) you.
  • Connect better: Develop your network without being political. Get on "the list" of people who get the best opportunities.

Whether you are just starting up the corporate ladder, stuck midcareer, transitioning, or eyeing the corner office, Rise shows you the difference between getting ahead and just working hard.

Thank you Patty

Would you consider the audio edition of Rise to be better than the print version?

We've never met and candidly I was unfamiliar with you before hearing you being interview on Something You Should Know podcast. Great content and wise, useful advice. I bought a copy for me and one for my son and son-in-law. I'm near retirement but reading your book will help me in conversation with them on the topics you've written about. Again, thank you.

Fantastic book but read it

Patti is great but not a professional reader. The voice is not one to listen to for hours. The book is amazing. Patti please get someone to read this for you!

This author should NOT narrate her own books

Her reading voice is annoying to listen to. It's different than her typical voice. She needs to just hire talented narrators. Her voice comes off too harshly, almost as a reprimand.

The book every IC has been waiting for!

Patty is like the mentor I've been hoping to find in my career. She's ruthless with her priorities and she tells you exactly how you've got to think and what you've got to do in order to get ahead. She also does not waste any time promoting unnecessary social justice agendas which was a breath of fresh air in this genre.

Also, I'd like to provide a note of reassurance to anyone seeing the reviews criticizing Patty's narrator performance. One of my criteria for a great narrator is if I can listen to them at 2x or even 3x speed and still comprehend them; I had no problem doing that with her. I was rushing through the book at one point because I just could not wait to apply what I had finally learned after so many years. More importantly, she speaks with a resolve that is captivating and without arrogance -- an achievement all in itself.
