Publisher's summary

Ella has a Thing. She sees a classmate grow up to become a caring nurse. A neighbor's son murdered in a drive-by shooting. Things that haven't happened yet. Kev, born while Los Angeles burned around them, wants to protect his sister from a power that could destroy her. But when Kev is incarcerated, Ella must decide what it means to watch her brother suffer while holding the ability to wreck cities in her hands.

Rooted in the hope that can live in anger, Riot Baby is as much an intimate family story as a global dystopian narrative. It burns fearlessly toward revolution and has quietly devastating things to say about love, fury, and the black American experience.

Ella and Kev are both shockingly human and immeasurably powerful. Their childhoods are defined and destroyed by racism. Their futures might alter the world.

Hard but wonderful!

This book actually made me cry and whisper over and over, "No, don't, please don't." My only critique would be that because the story moves back and forth in time and explores various timelines, it can feel unfocused and rambling. The story, though, is wonderful and challenging. Tochi Onyebuchi takes your breath away as a narrator. Share this with younger family members and then talk about it.

New York swag meets sci fi kool

If you grew up in New York or had friends from there, this book will take you there. The sci fi edge is different with the New York gritty backdrop. I can't wait for the next 1.

Powerful, raw, beautiful

LOVED IT! Tochi Onyebuchi explores with elegance and his unique writing style the issues of race, alienation, anger, loneliness, injustice, hardship, power, strength, trauma, repression, acceptance, filial love, and so much more. He weaves them all into an intricate tapestry--and his perfect narration just pumps even more life into his words

Everywhere All At Once

The history of violence linked to the rapid decline via analog was an excellent touch. The balance of power to end it all based on two angry young people of color holding each other in check with only their shared love for their mother and her faith in god..is unforgettable.

injustice and super hero powers

An interesting story that makes a point but with a pessimistic ending. Not that I can blame the characters in the book. but it feels like nothing was resolved unfortunately. But this book is worth the read. It's short and gets its point across. I look forward to other work from this author.
