Publisher's Summary

Charlotte Parkhurst was raised in the mid-1800s and was expected to live her life without the freedoms she dreamed of. But Charlotte was smart and determined, and she figured out a way to live her life the way she wanted. She became an expert horse rider, a legendary stagecoach driver, and the first woman ever to vote - at a time when such things were outlawed for women.

Critic Reviews

"[An] ebullient and tautly structured novel that moves along at a gallop." ( Publishers Weekly)
"The author provides a compact and exciting story about real people who exemplify traits that readers admire. A concluding note tells more about the historical facts surrounding Parkhurst's life, but kids will read it just for the adventure." ( School Library Journal)

Absolutely loved the story & historical background

This is a story well worth listening to. The narrator is lovely and the historical background for the foundation of the story at the end is wonderful. I am so grateful I chose this quick listen. I love that I know this historic fact about the right for women to vote.

Wow, I can finally say that after 20 years that I finally read “Riding Freedom.” This was one of the books to read in my school’s library when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade. It was so popular to the point where I couldn’t get a copy unless I bought it from a book fair. I remember reading a biography on Charley Parkhurst after finding out there was indeed a real Charley but not if I read this book. Decided to air on the side of caution and get it since it was free on Audible. Truth be told, I realize I’m not the demographic this book is meant for but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this book as an adult.

I really enjoyed this story. It was almost a perfect book for me except for one thing. I wanted more than the soft hints of romance than what we got. “You know how I feel about you. ...’I know’.” and a nice long hug between them was nice but a kiss on the cheek would have been better. If the author was already taking liberties with the timeline so why not give us a kiss or couple confirmation? I feel after all Hay and Charlotte have been through they deserve love. Plus the real Charley gave birth so why not make them a couple.

The real-life Charley Parkhurst is a great example to kids that you can do anything you want and that nothing should stop you. I definitely think that any elementary school student would enjoy this book tremendously.

Captivating Story

This was such a captivating, yet melancholy, story of a young orphan girl who escapes her orphanage. It’s historical fiction— the author adds a historical note at the end of the story. The reader was excellent! She captured the genre of the book perfectly. My 9, 7, and 5 year old loved listening to this in the car with me!
