Publisher's summary

Can an ordinary guy make extraordinary choices in a battle between humanity and unearthly evil?

Joe Mandel is a perfectly ordinary guy from a perfectly ordinary town - a college student and community volunteer who dreams of one day publishing a novel. When a series of strange intuitions leads him to a crime in progress, Joe jumps headlong into danger without hesitation. In the aftermath, he wonders about the uncanny impulse that suddenly swept over him.

Until new friend Portia Montclair, the strangely wise daughter of the local police chief, explains to him what sent him ricocheting around town like a crazy pinball. Portia tells of another reality, a reality more thrilling - and terrifying - than Joe ever imagined. Timeless, elemental forces of good and evil have come to the quiet town of Little City: a cosmic entity capable of infecting human beings, and the seeker who has chosen Joe to find it.

To stop the malevolent invader, this average Joe must be braver than he ever thought possible...and face the hardest decisions of his life.

Every Dean Koontz story has the same outline

There were a few nice touches, but all in all, there were the same supernatural horrors, the same pure-hearted hero, and the same golden retriever. I had been hoping for something different, something out of Mr. Koontz’s box, if only just a little. But no. He has a successful formula. Why tamper with it?

MISS BELL AND JOE ARE NO OOD THOMAS!

Both Ashley Bell and Ricochet Joe made me miss Odd Thomas and I expected more.

Classic Koontz

As always with impeccably dry wit Koontz offers compelling characters in tale worth reading. This short story could easily be the beginning of another series, comparable to Odd Thomas, or not for it is as satisfyingly compelling and intriguing as is complete and brief.

a little too short

This book though short was well developed. Dean Koontz is a skilled writer and I continue to appreciate his books always focusing on good triumphing over evil and the bitter sweet duality of life.

Who is in my mind?

I really wasn't too excited about this story. It was interesting but I just couldn't get past some of the actions that bothered me.

the story was a bit out there. I liked the beginning but as it went along it seemed like it jumped the track

Interesting Short Story

This is one of my first books by Dean Koontz. His style of writing and use of detail i found very enjoyable and engaging. Best explained as enough to give you a clear image of whats going on, without being information overload. The story itself was very good. With interesting plot points, ideas, and twists. It is however very short and because of this uses some "conveniences" for the sake of time it seems. an example (no spoilers) when the main character Joe begins his mission he brings a weapon. Before this it is said he had never used one before, but due to another factor (that i wont name for spoilers) he instantly and expert with it upon picking it up. Like i said, there are a few of these conveniences, but they do not ruin the story and allow for quick movement from important plot point/event to another one. The narrator also did a very good job. His voices are clear and easy to understand, and the reading experience is better for it.

Ricochet Joe

Enjoyed listening to the book but felt like the character Joe was missing something. He didn't engage me enough to care about what he did. Waited for more of him
