Publisher's Summary

A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs - including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of 13, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family’s horrific loss. In his mid-30s - addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate - Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.

This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It’s a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Slow

Excruciatingly slow and predictable. I am a big Stephen King fan and have read many of his novels and short stories. Many of them are known to slow down in the middle and become tedious, but I have never disliked a book simply because there is a slower portion. Revival has changed that for me insofar as I am an individual who must finish a book once I've started it, and I felt that I was just waiting, painfully, for it to finally be over. If a few chapters in you think you know what happens in the end, you are probably right.

Disappointed

What did you like best about Revival? What did you like least?

There wasn't much to lIke about this book. I was waiting for something to happen but it never did.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The name Stephen King is synonymous with horror. There was absolutely no horror in this book.

Which scene was your favorite?

None

Could you see Revival being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No

Any additional comments?

I hope Stephen King returns to the writing that made him a household name.

Not my favorite King story

King is one of my favorites. Partly because I'm from Maine and have been to some of the places he writes about. Mostly because I like the characters and stories. This one not so much. It was a good story with interesting people, but just seemed like a half-hearted attempt compared to others. Kind of like it started as a movie script that was later turned into a novel. Also, there were some issues with the recording. Frequently it is easy to tell when a recording session ended & began because there were changes in volume or tonal quality. Not awful, but not flawless either. Then end is classic King. Both concluded and not concluded at the time.

Read all of SK books

I've read all of SK books and this was my least favorite. It started really strong, built slowly, and ended in an anti - religious mantra. Yawn.

Pass on this, find an alternative Stephen King novel

I am a lifelong fan of Stephen King. I am sad to give this a bad review. The story starts off promising with great initial characters but then goes on for 11 hours with just a so-so ending. Please take my advice, pass on this one novel and find an alternative Stephen King novel. 😪

A weak cup of tea

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or David Morse?

Absolutely. This one did not grab me.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

The story was too slow.

Did David Morse do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, he was good at that.

Did Revival inspire you to do anything?

No I guess not.

Boring!

This is not a typical Stephen King book. Just drones on and on about nothing. Can't even get invested in characters. Boring , quit after 3 hours of droning!

Who wrote this?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I am a Stephen King fan, but feel this is not a King book. King usually has some twists and turns that are unexpected, but this book is nothing at all like that. It is boring, and goes on and on until the expected end. It may be a while before I read another King book.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

If Stephen King had written this book would have been nice. I feel he had an apprentice write this under his name.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Morse?

I don't know if I could think of anyone else to read this book. It is so boring that I am sure the reader was just as bored.

Was Revival worth the listening time?

Not at all!

Any additional comments?

I am sorry David Morse had to read such a boring book. I only hope he gets a more interesting book to read with the next job.

Long and boring until the last bit. No spoilers but whats with the “boogie man” and SK with spiders and such ala “IT”? Hmmmm.
