Publisher's summary

Robinswood Estate, County Waterford, Ireland. 1946.

Years of neglect and abandonment have left the family seat of the Keneficks almost derelict, but the new Lord Kenefick and his charming young wife Kate are determined to breathe life into the old house once more.

The war is over, and they have survived, so now they must set about making a bright future for themselves and their family. But the shadows of the past are ever lurking, and there are many who are not willing to see the new Lady Kenefick as anything more than the housekeeper's daughter.

Kate’s family, the Murphys, find themselves once more inextricably entwined with both the Keneficks and Robinswood, but this time everything is different - or at least they hope it is.

The legacy of the war cannot be erased, and the events of those fateful years will not be forgotten. Can Robinswood provide a haven for those who need it, or are the scars of the past too deep?

Slow and somewhat dull

Reasonably well written, despite the fact that I did not feel engaged with the characters. Some people may.

I found it useful for listening to at night while trying to go to sleep.

Predictable in a good way

This was an enjoyable read (listen). The speaker is very good and the author is predictably very good!

Better than book one

I really like the way the author melts all characters together. Ending the story on Christmas Day is wonderful.

better than book 1

I almost didn't listen to book 2 since the first was just ok, nothing special. The 2nd was better than the 1st! Glad I did

Mini-series

If ever there was a sequel set of books- this set should be a PBS Masterpiece Theater one!

I'm hooked again!

Jean Grainger is a lovely storyteller. Being Irish and having read a lot about the uprising in 1916 and the IRA later on, I have found this series to be very interesting. It's fascinating to see the class distinctions crumble due to WWII. In all of Grainger's books there is some intrigue which adds to the story. I have read 8 of Ms. Grainger's books so far and all have been at least highly readable and entertaining and most just wonderful!

Easy listening

Characters were likable especially as they grew and changed. Appreciated family dynamics. So enjoyed the narration, could listen to all day. Was a fairytale for grownups but a very enjoyable listen

Theme still holds true today; excellent story and narration

Ms. Grainger’s story is filled with an array of characters from different walks of life, who come together to show that “family” are those you love and who love you, regardless of their backgrounds and past experiences.
The theme of acceptance, tolerance and forgiveness is pervasive and still very relevant today.
It would be wonderful if we could all take these lessons to heart and stop the hate and separation for everyone.
Love these characters so much! I look forward to book 3 and hope she writes more about this wonderful group of people.
Carlene O’Connor is a superb narrator. A bit nervous that the 3rd book has a different narrator.
