Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-seller Jennifer A. Nielsen tells the extraordinary story of a Jewish girl's courageous efforts to resist the Nazis.

Chaya Lindner is a teenager living in Nazi-occupied Poland. Simply being Jewish places her in danger of being killed or sent to the camps. After her little sister is taken away, her younger brother disappears, and her parents all but give up hope, Chaya is determined to make a difference. Using forged papers and her fair features, Chaya becomes a courier and travels between the Jewish ghettos of Poland, smuggling food, papers, and even people.

Soon Chaya joins a resistance cell that runs raids on the Nazis' supplies. But after a mission goes terribly wrong, Chaya's network shatters. She is alone and unsure of where to go, until Esther, a member of her cell, finds her and delivers a message that chills Chaya to her core, and sends her on a journey toward an even larger uprising in the works - in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Though the Jewish resistance never had much of a chance against the Nazis, they were determined to save as many lives as possible, and to live - or die - with honor.

Master storyteller

After listening to A Night Divided (also 5*) I gave this one a try and was not disappointed.

The backdrop of the Holocaust and the evil of the Nazis is already fraught with emotion and suspense. Knowing this account is pulled from history, you cannot help but be moved and engrossed. The fictional characters and plot have depth and empathy but there is plenty of action and tension.

This story is at times soul crushing and uplifting. It is a celebration of the human spirit in the darkest of times.

Exceptional story telling

This was an exciting insite into the Jewish suffering and resiliency during WWII. the weaving of fictional characters into real events and scenarios gave a unique perspective on the struggles and human side if war. I appreciated Jen's comments on why she wrote the book and respect her honest portrayal of characters.

Okay....

Because of how bad the story is, in my opinion, I shall save you the sob. Instead I will just be writing about the performance. Overall I would say this was an average run of the mill speaker, which would be a three star, but the way they flowed their words really kept me from sleeping while listening to this sad excuse of a book... Jk... Its not that bad, I just don’t recommend it.

Resistance

This one of Jennifer A. Nelson best books. It really has the feeling of sadness and bravery. It makes you feel angry and I just love it.
