Publisher's summary

John Birmingham is the master of alternate history adventure - and now he's mastered a new genre with the volcanically fast-paced and wildly inventive Dave Hooper urban fantasy series. The series is anchored by a thrilling high concept: An oil rig opens a deep ocean rift that unleashes terrifying monsters into the world.

But perhaps its coolest asset is its hero, Dave Hooper: a tough, bleakly funny, down-on-his luck oil rig worker with an unlikely destiny as a monster slayer and world savior. With a memorable concept and an unforgettable new hero, the Dave Hooper series will satisfy Birmingham's large fanbase and convert a new legion of devoted fans.

the story lacked direction with the main character

The main character lacked direction. The story was a cross of Hulk smash and I hate the government but will work for them. I don't appreciate whining from the main character.

I just...I can't do it...

Would you try another book from John Birmingham and/or Mark Zeisler?

Based on this and the first book in the series, no, I don't think so.

What was most disappointing about John Birmingham’s story?

The main character is disappointingly dense. We keep getting reminded about how he has multiple engineering degrees and is in charge of a team that performs dangerous and exacting work. What we actually get is a moron who rarely bothers to think, and when he does, it's typically not with his head. Time after time, we're shown that he is surrounded by competent if sometimes contrary individuals, and time after time he chooses his own inane answer instead of listening to sound advice. There's a major disconnect here, and it's infuriating.

Any additional comments?

I really wanted to like this series. It's a cool concept, and has some fun possibilities. It's fun to see the monsters of old run headlong into the technology of today. The main character is entirely too obnoxious, though.

Juvenile and vulgar

I love me some raw, vulgar, action packed books, but this was ridiculous. At least with books like sandman slim or monster hunter international, you have engaging characters and a story that draws you in completely. This book is made for the type of simpleton moron who just laughs every time they hear the word penis. You know, the type of people who don't even read books.

Pretty awful

I agree with the other reviewers that didn’t like the book. The story has the opportunity to be interesting. I got through book 1 hoping the MC was going to see some growth. I guess he did, just not what I had in mind. I can look around the real world and see lots of misogynistic bigots like this guy. If he’s not going to develop into a better version of himself, I don’t care to hear any more of this drivel. It’s for 15 year old boys whose parents let them read mature material.

Annoying delivery

The good news is that if you enjoyed book one you get a 2nd book that cranks the throttle for you. The bad part is that apparently the narrator did everything on his first take; he takes breaths at weird moments destroying how the sentences flow and stumbles over words. I swear it sounds like he is reading this out loud for the first time,in the dark, with a dying flashlight.
