Publisher's Summary

“The time for Kiero’s reign in prosperity is over.”

Six years before the Black Dawn Rebellion, Adair Stratton and Emory Fae are following in their parent’s footsteps and living at The Academy, a home for those who are gifted. The pressure to uphold the future of their parent’s dream falls on them. An outcast and feared by most, Adair longs to break away from the expectations dictating his future. Even if Emory tries to make him see differently. An unexpected group of friends keep him there, but as whispers of unexplained disappearances start reaching from the capital, Adair starts to doubt The Academy is all it seems.

An unexpected visit ignites new tensions as the roguish king from across the Black Sea, Tadeas Maher of the Shattered Isles, and his heir, Marquis Maher sail to Kiero. Notorious for their pirating and wrath - for the first time in years, they demand the Fae’s listen to their proposition for a new treaty, holding the news of Nei’s father’s abrupt death over them. Caught in the middle of politics, Adair and Emory, with the help of their best friends Brokk and Memphis search for the one thing that matters most: finding out the truth.

In this gripping prequel to Black Dawn, their world is tipped upside down as unlikely alliances are made. War ravages through Kiero and is torn apart by acclaimed Kings. Through the throes of betrayal, lies, hidden magic and love, Adair is faced with a life changing decision - to fight or to bow to the darkness within him.

Loved the Narrator

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I loved the narrator. She did different voices for the characters and it was amazing. I had a hard time following all the characters and felt like I needed a back story or something. I just felt like I was missing something. I haven’t read the other books so maybe that’s what the issue was.

Pay attention

I overall enjoyed the story. It was an interesting plot but I struggled to keep up with all of the characters and relationships. The voices and characters were great.

I was given this audiobook for free for an honest and unbiased review.

Really good book

I really enjoyed listening to Renegade. It was intriguing and drew me in from the prologue. Raquel was a good choice in a narrator.

Renegade

I loved the narrator she voiced all the characters which is a great feat sinces there are a few of them in the book.
The story is interesting and it kept me engaged until the end. My only negative is that I would have liked some more background/character information but other then this I liked it.
I would recommend it to all.

Politics everywhere

** I received a free review copy of this book, my review is voluntary and unbiased.**

The world is interesting, So interesting I think there should have been a prequel detailing some of the political factions and what led to the government shifts and the founding of Kiero and the Academy. There are some strong political themes throughout the book, and for the most part the politics make sense. There are some areas where I think there wasn't enough effort put in to make sure we cared about the status quo before they fall apart. The main characters are all in upheaval over a catastrophe that befall their land. However If they spent another 30 minutes or so showing us why we should care about this little nation school thing and the people that live there, it would have been more impactful when catastrophe strikes.

Everyone in the academy has powers of some variety and they are ostensibly at the academy to learn to control their powers, though there are some who feel they are essentially being turned into weapons, and that important secrets are being kept from the students. When war strikes the students are unleashed as tools of war but the war turns out to be a bit different than anticipated.

The cast is quite strong, diverse personalities well characterized and narrated very well. I do think there are a couple of instances of characters overreacting or making decisions to benefit the plots development that seemed just a bit forced but it only happens a couple times and isn't really a big deal.

The Narrator is excellent she gives the characters their own personality without overacting them, and she does this creepy child doll voice for the weird demon things it works very well.

Overall I am quite pleased with this book there is a lot going on between the political storyline the coming of age storyline, and the demons invading storyline and just piecing everything together.

Good Prequel

This is a prequel and it interested me enough to want to read the series. The story is engaging with characters that I couldn't help liking. The narrator did a great job bring the story to life. I'm excited to read more from this author

Fast paced prequel to an existing series

When I first started listening to this book I was unaware that it was a part of a series from the same author. I personally think that the cover should have indicated this . It made more sense to me when I researched and found out that this is a prequel . To be honest I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the other novels first. At some points I think the book was too fast paced and I got completely lost with some of the action scenes . I am sure some readers who have followed the series will love this book but it just wasnt for me as a standalone. I was given this book by the author/narrator in return for an honest and unbiased review
