Publisher's summary

This started out as an attempt to do something nice for my sister. Her stepson lost a very close friend to the Atlantic Ocean, and I wanted to come up with something they could do to commemorate losing him.

It started out as a certificate, but the more I thought, I realized that so many people lose loved ones to the ocean every year, that maybe I should do something they could us as well.

There’s no guidebook for this.

There are so many resources and ways to remember loved ones who pass on in other ways, but when a loved one is lost to the sea and the body is never reclaimed, it opens a wound that never closes.

Call it denial, distance from tragedy, or just a psychological defense mechanism, but as I worked on this, it opened up memories of my own about the ones sacrificed to the waters.

I worked on a water rescue team for many years, and had my own experiences with this. I experienced first-hand the times we looked for days for someone and didn’t find them. I remember the times we found someone, but it was too late.
And I remember the rare instances when we brought someone home from the waters and returned them to their family.

I never knew him, but I also have the stories of my grandmother’s first husband who went down with his ship in the Arctic during World War II. My grandmother received nothing but paperwork when he was lost.

It is my prayer that what you find within this guide will help you remember your lost loved one. That wound never fully closes, but remembering them in a meaningful way will help you move on. It’s what they would want for you.
