Publisher's summary

When four religious leaders walk across the road, it's not the beginning of a joke. It's the start of one of the most important conversations in today's world.

Can you be a committed Christian without having to condemn or convert people of other faiths? Is it possible to affirm other religious traditions without watering down your own?

In his most important book yet, widely acclaimed author and speaker Brian McLaren proposes a new faith alternative, one built on "benevolence and solidarity rather than rivalry and hostility". This way of being Christian is strong but doesn't strong-arm anyone, going beyond mere tolerance to vigorous hospitality toward, interest in, and collaboration with the other.

Blending history, narrative, and brilliant insight, McLaren shows readers step-by-step how to reclaim this strong-benevolent faith, challenging us to stop creating barriers in the name of God and learn how affirming other religions can strengthen our commitment to our own. And in doing so, he invites Christians to become more Christ-like than ever before.

Brilliant remaining of Christian identity

I have enjoyed several of Brian's books, but this had a ring of truthfulness, as he tackled one of the most important issues for the future of the world - living as a neighbour as a Christian with people of other faiths.

The added bonus was hearing him read the book which added depth, and meaning for me. One of the best audio books I have listened to, to which I will turn again, and highly recommend to religious and non-religious listeners.

deeply flawed reasoning

I've read other books by Brian McLaren and recommended them. I heard him speak at a conference once and really enjoyed it. He's a great speaker and very kind.
I am really disappointed in his apologetics in this book. Many many reasoning errors. Many misleading premises.
Why you do what you do is more important than what you do. For this reason, I don't disagree with most of the conclusions of this book but, if you have the wrong ultimate goal you will be willing to make the wrong sacrifices and compromises.
Mr. McLaren begins with a deeply flawed description of God's calling on our lives and therefore the wrong ultimate goal.
I enjoyed this book very much.

How to hold your faith with love and hospitality

A light hearted title with a well argued and life changing message. Heady and heavy stuff. I’ll have to read it twice to get half of what is in here to hear.

There is important stuff to learn and live in these pages. Read it!

In a world filled with division…

We must learn to love those who are different from us. Orthodoxy is not more important than orthopraxy. Brian presents good ideas for bridging into other faiths, not necessarily for conversion, but to understand and love. Love, not doctrine will change the world.

Wow what a book

I loved this book. So much of what the author said were things I have thought for years. To hear my thoughts from another person made me feel less alone in this religious world. I consider this a must read and perhaps a few will get this as a Christmas gift.

My Spiritual Muscles

I don’t want a boring faith that doesn’t grow. Instead, I want a dynamic, creative, growing faith that’s exciting, that stretches me and that makes me feel that God is smiling at me. Brian McLaren makes me think. He pushes me to stretch and work my spiritual muscles. It’s exciting to grow in the wonder of the Lord and, hopefully, make me a better Christ follower. This book does that.
