Publisher's summary

More than a decade ago, Jerry Sittser prayed for the protection of his family, yet three of his loved ones - his daughter, his wife, and his mother - died in an automobile accident. What went wrong?

"Why wasn't my prayer answered?" he asks. "It is no longer an abstract question to me. What should we do and how should we respond when our prayers - prayers that seem right and true and good - go unanswered?"

In When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer, Sittser continues exploring the issues he addressed in A Grace Disguised. He asks, "Why doesn't God answer our prayers? What, if anything, can we do about it?" Sittser is intensely committed to exploring the Christian faith, especially when it doesn't seem to "work". In this thoughtful and beautifully written book, he moves beyond easy answers and religious formulas to explore the goodness and greatness of a God who cannot be controlled but can be trusted.

When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer takes an honest and probing look at the problem of unanswered prayer. In doing so, it draws us ever deeper into a relationship with the God who is the end of all our prayers, the object of our faith, and the one who fulfills our deepest longings.

Critic reviews

"Any Christian who has ever questioned the validity of prayer will find this to be a luminous book, full of vulnerable and venerable wisdom." (Publishers Weekly)

Practical and realistic

Contrasting this book with prosperity gospel messages, Sittser is more realistic and in line with scripture when it comes to what we can expect out of prayer. He offers insights of how American consumerism has seeped into our understanding of who God is and His role in our prayer lives. Our Ginnie-in-the-bottle attitudes toward the spiritual life must be corrected if we are to ever understand the true heart of God and grow in our relationship with Him through prayer. He reminds us of a forgotten foundation of Christian theology, which focuses our hope in the eternal, not the prosperity of this world.

Solid theology

I believe that this book, even though it does not quote a great deal of scripture, is based on solid theology. It will not give you the answers that you will sometimes seek. It will give you soon understanding of why you cannot always expect answers even from a God who cares.

All Prayers shouldn't be answered

When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer(s) gives the reader the direction that should be explained in the earlier stages of life where some are taught to pray for what you want. Most of the time the energy that goes into those prayers are self serving. This book explains the depth of when and how prayers are answered and not answered because the prayer is not worthy.

Worth thinking about.

Transparent. The author writes from his gutt level experience. He does not mince words regarding his struggles to understand prayer.

Best Book On Prayer I've Ever Read

Although the topic is unanswered prayer, in the process of dealing with this issue Jerry Sittser ends up writing one of the best books on prayer in general I've ever read (and I've read quite a few!). Highly recommended!

Excellent

I felt like I was sitting with a friend and discussing a very worthwile and important issue. The author draws not only from his spiritual journey, but brings in thoughts and insights from a large host of others that have experienced similar situations, and then backs it up with a solid biblical foundation. It can also be used a guided study as there are discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
