Publisher's summary

Since the age of the apostles, great scholars and lay Christians alike have reflected upon the meaning of Scripture, the nature of divinity, the call to discipleship, and countless other topics in our religious tradition. This practice, known as theology, is as important to Christian life today as ever. And yet, theology can sometimes seem remote from the everyday life of faith; too often, we view it as an obscure activity conducted in the ivory towers of academic life.

Now, Boston College’s Fr. Richard Lennan remedies this misconception with an accessible and engaging overview of history’s most vital theological topics. An expert theologian and brilliant teacher, Fr. Lennan guides you through the tasks, methods, and goals of theology in this masterful 12-lecture audio course.

As you listen, you’ll gain valuable insight into your own faith. Discover the profound relationship between the activity of theologians and the everyday world of living faith. Understanding theology will help you deepen your relationship with God and answer Jesus’ call to discipleship in our own time.

Join Fr. Lennan on this fascinating and insightful journey through our religious tradition. This course will enrich your mind and inspire your spirit.

This course is part of the Learn25 collection and includes a free PDF study guide.

Critic reviews

"This superb work fills a major gap on the Christian and Catholic ecclesiology shelf. It should also be enormously helpful for anyone seeking a toehold on the entire Rahnerian corpus....Belongs in every theological collection." ( Choice)
"[This book]...is a very good one....a scholarly study...written clearly enough to be accessible to a motivated nonspecialist." ( Commonweal)
"An excellent example of reasoned theology in the midst of the many other forms of theological argument." ( Horizons)

It really is Theology 101!

What to expect:
Sustained abstract concepts and a brief but holistic treatment of theology.
This would be helpful for seminary students or those wishing to teach the subject themselves, and could be seen as a jumping-off point for further study. Most of the course is spent defining theology and emphasizing the nature of its goals.

Narrator (as author):
Fr Lennan is articulate and precise in his language, conveying a wealth of perspective and careful study into this subject. however, this course does not cover the basic (or many individual) teachings of the Church. How could it, being only 5 hours?

Recommended with reservations; I would love to see a more systematic treatment by this author. I will likely purchase his "Understanding Church Theology" audio course to see how it compares.

Misleading Title

This was not what I was expecting. Very little actual theology was taught, it was more of a theoretical overview. Perhaps it should be retitled as Theory of Theology 101, which would be more accurate, but in which case I also would not have bought it! It was not bad for what it ended up being, but I was disappointed as I kept waiting for the actual theology to start.
