Publisher's summary

"We need to encourage an understanding that inner peace comes from relying on human values like love, compassion, tolerance, and honesty, and that peace in the world relies on individuals finding inner peace." - His Holiness, the Dalai Lama

These 6 words - please heal my fear-based thoughts - change lives. In this brief and inspiring audiobook, based on Engle's study of A Course in Miracles, she explains how to use the prayer and experience immediate benefits:

  • being less irritable, more patient
  • laughing more
  • feeling like you have more time, more energy
  • worrying less
  • making decisions more easily
  • saying no without guilt

A typical prayer goes something like this: "Please help us find the money to pay our mortgage this month." Saying the prayer may help you feel like the burden of that month's mortgage has been lifted, but the part of you that feeds on fear will simply seek out new financial worries to keep you awake at night. Old patterns remain intact.

In contrast, asking, "Please heal my fear-based thoughts about our mortgage" lifts the burden and relieves the need to re-create that fear and hold onto it. This prayer heals your very desire for burdens, your addiction to fear-based thoughts, freeing you to live without that fear and with greater peace of mind. As a result, your financial situation is also free to improve. That's what makes it so different.

One Facebook fan told Engle, "The most blessed aspect of this prayer is all the open space it creates for peace - I never knew how many fear-based thoughts were clogging up in me until… this prayer."

One of my top 5 favorite books for a path to peace

Deborah writes like the two of you are on a walk or speaking as friends at a coffee shop. Practical. Kind. Wise. Storytelling. Mixed with her profound discovery of the only little prayer we need. It is a gift that just keeps on giving.

Very Brief and Very Lacking in Depth or Nuance

Much of what is discussed here is perhaps an early and abbreviated started point for becoming aware of one's thoughts and the narratives that keep us fixated on things we can't control and often make our experience unhappy. The idea that changing your perspective can greatly change the experience of one's life is quite common among reading this way. However this book is just the beginning of mindfulness and thought work. I could easily see this concept being misconstrued and becoming incredibly reductionistic. The author even discusses in the FAQs that this approach is not about changing anyone else or anyone's environment but simply praying to be released from the thoughts of fear that pop up in this situations seems to fall short of mentioning that this means once you are free of the narratives that may have created suffering you may still need to develop boundaries, clear communication, make decisions about what is not working. The idea of just catching catching whenever you are having "fear" thoughts and saying a prayer to change this state of mind can offer a meditation like the serenity prayer but one might find better depth of this topic and more structure to work through these patterns in Byron Katie's The Work and those seeking more spiritual depth with prayers and change and release of expectations might enjoy Tosha Silver's Outrageous Openness and Change Me Prayers.

Sad & Insulting In One Nasty Package

You know life just is not the simple recipe this book presents it to be. Bad things happen to people all the time whether they work hard and pray or not. This whole thing reminds me of working in hospice and having dying patients told by well meaning friends/family that if only they prayed harder they would get better. Painful & heart breaking. In my opinion, a waste of time with concepts that just sicken me.
