Publisher's Summary

All Christian disciples have one thing in common: As they carry the Gospel across the ocean and across the street, persecution will become the norm for those who choose to follow Jesus. How believers respond in the face of persecution reveals everything about their level of faith and obedience.

The Insanity of Obedience is a bold challenge to global discipleship. Nik Ripken exposes the danger of safe Christianity and calls listeners to something greater. The Insanity of Obedience challenges Christians in the same provocative way that Jesus did. This book dares you - and prepares you - to cross the street and the oceans with the good news of Jesus Christ.

Some of Jesus' instructions sound uncomfortable and are potentially dangerous. We may be initially encouraged by his declaration, "I am sending you out." But how are we to respond when he then tells us that he is sending us out "like sheep among wolves"? In light of the words of Jesus, how can modern-day believers rest comfortably in the status quo? How can we embrace casual faith in light of the radical commands of Jesus, which are anything but casual?

Ripken brings decades of ministry experience in some of the most persecuted areas of the world to bear on our understanding of faith in Jesus. The Insanity of Obedience is a call to roll up your sleeves...and to follow and partner with Jesus in the toughest places on this planet.

"We have the high privilege of answering Jesus' call to go," Ripken says. "But let us be clear about this: We go on his terms, not ours. If we go at all, we go as sheep among wolves." Jesus gives us himself. And he gives us the tools necessary for those who dare to journey with him.

More than rocks the boat!

This book's precursor, Insanity of God, rocked the boat, but Insanity of Obedience threw me out of it.

Challenged me greatly!

I loved this book, but it was painful to read because it showed how short I come from being a dedicated disciple of Jesus.
It is a must read for any person interested in missions and discipleship.

Every Christian MUST read this book!!

Yes. It is that powerful!!!!!! How to live with a eternal perspective. Are we willing to die for our faith? Do you care about being "safe"? Does it matter? Before reading this book, you must first read the Insanity of God! Both books are on my top 5. If you have a passion for the Muslim world, you must read both books!

Tough to get through but some good content

Being honest, this book was tough to complete. I loved the narration and you can pick out some good content, but it was very repetitive and sort of...dry? I expected something compelling, maybe convicting, but it felt more like a how-to book. The few good stories used to illustrate points I had already read in Nik's other books. Good for Pastor's or current overseas workers.

challenging and important read.

I learned much about faith as an MBB, faith can always choose to share, how God uses persecution, how missionaries can cause more problems and how to better disciple. I learned how to apply it to my life here. it's making a difference in my life.

Obedience may be insanity

Obedience in sharing our faith is always an option that can't be taken away from Christians. It may appear to be insane but it is the right choice according to this author. There will be consequences but it is always still an option. I was stretched by this book and am glad for that. I liked the reader for this as well.

Life changing: How is a true follower of Jesus

It should be required reading for all Christians. It shows what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus. It should be read, early in Christian life before one's faith is affected or destroyed by the lukewarmness of the Western Church. Even though it contains deep biblical insight t is not just someone's untested opinion but instead the author went and interviewed those that survived and thrived in the hardest test we know and fear: the trial of persecution against them and their families due to their faith.

A Sobering, eye opening and heart melting dose of Christian reality

Having listened to and read a great many books/audiobooks from the early church fathers as well as myriad works by more contemporary authors and scholars: few have reached so deep into my heart as did this audiobook. It has given me, an ordinary run-of-the western Christian, an entirely new frame of reference by which to consider what it means to "share in the suffering of Christ."

After listening to this audiobook, and going back to parts of it for deeper insight, I was left with a sense of shame as I considered my issues from the new perspective imparted to me by this audiobook. While I don't mean to marginalize anyone else's troubles (suffering is relative to each according their station in life), I am now acutely aware of the fact that there is a fundamental degree of persecution by which all other suffering can be compared regardless of circumstance.

To the author, and those who helped bring this message by way of audiobook, I offer my sincere gratitude for how my perspective is changing. More importantly, to my persecuted brethren I offer my prayer in unison with all they who have done so and continue in faith to this very moment. I shall seek in my prayer for guidance from The Holy Spirit to learn how to apply what I've learned for the good of my persecuted brethren, and for the resolve to be obedient in carrying out the same.
