Publisher's summary

Meditation offers, in addition to its many other benefits, a method for achieving previously inconceivable levels of concentration. Author B. Alan Wallace has nearly 30 years' practice in attention-enhancing meditation, including a retreat he performed under the guidance of the Dalai Lama. An active participant in the much-publicized dialogues between Buddhists and scientists, Alan is uniquely qualified to speak intelligently to both camps, and The Attention Revolution is the definitive presentation of his knowledge.

Beginning by pointing out the ill effects that follow from our inability to focus, Wallace moves on to explore a systematic path of meditation to deepen our capacity for deep concentration. The result is an exciting, rewarding "expedition of the mind", tracing everything from the confusion at the bottom of the trail to the extraordinary clarity and power that come with making it to the top. Along the way, the author also provides interludes and complementary practices for cultivating love, compassion, and clarity in our waking and dreaming lives.

Attention is the key that makes personal change possible, and the good news is that it can be trained. This book shows how.

It's too difficult for me.

I think it this book is a bit theoretical not practical. Many philosophical words used.
Anyway it's difficult for me. hard to read.

Incredible.

This is a comprehensive work for beginner and in depth seeker alike. I recommend it to all and find its value irrefutable. While the performance is rather rigid, its exacting tone equates well with the arch of focused attention. The writing is clear, beautiful, and beyond bring with meaning.

good book about Samatha meditation.

A deep dive into Samatha meditation explaining the different levels and how they can be attained.

A bit heavy for anyone not dedicated to meditation.

Magnificent

Useful, clear and straight to the point. Summarizes meditation in simple steps. Very thorough though but without dragging or dwelling on the ideas.

Good book; lacks a little

This book was very good, though it lacks a little with regard to its idealism. It also doesn't show clearly how to achieve all of the stages of Samatha, as it just says that most people won't achieve it. I know it's a little idealistic to expect everyone to be able to achieve this state of mind, but it'd be better to have more actionable steps for laymen (like me) to achieve some degree of mental clarity. Other than that, I thought the book was very clear and provided decent meditation instructions. I like the subject matter, as well.

Great guide for the meditation practitioner

This is the best book I’ve read explaining the path to reach Samatha. It’s full of wisdom and clarity. I fully recommend it to all meditators, beginners and seasoned alike.

Why can't the narrator pronounce the words?

This is an amazing and important book. The narrator completely botches it - both in his inability to correctly pronounce Sanskrit words - and I'm not being picky, he slaughters them - and in his lack of appropriate intonations. He reads everything as if he doesn't understand what he is reading. It's hard to believe that Audible could allow someone to completely ruin a fabulous book.

Conflicted thoughts; Fantastic book but not necessarily reflective of book’s title or the introduction.

I truly walked away from this book with incredible insight and reflection. Although, the book’s title/cover art and introduction sets the listener up for an entirely different experience than what is actually delivered. Lastly, the narrator was fine, but the audio production was poor and heavy on the low end (bass).
