Publisher's summary

Comic Superheroes embody the hopes of a world that is desperate for a savior. But those comic creations do not have what it takes to save us from our greatest foes - sin and death.

Jesus Christ is able to save us because he is all that the Bible says that he is, fully human and fully divine. According to the logic of the gospel, Jesus must be everything the Bible says that he is so that he can do everything the Bible says that he does.

Throughout the history of the Church there have been bad ideas, misconceptions, and heretical presentations of Jesus. Each one of these heresies fails to present Jesus as the Bible reveals him. And each one of these heresies is embodied in a different comic superhero.

Using a comic superhero as an illustration of each heresy, Superheroes Can’t Save You presents a history of the deficient view of Jesus; an investigation of contemporary proponents of that heresy; warnings on how contemporary Christians can unwittingly fall into such bad thinking of Jesus; a biblically faithful correction on who Jesus is; and an explanation of why it is important that we understand who Jesus actually is.

Many Christians may not understand the language and vocabulary of theological terms like hypostatic union, person, or essence. But they do know who Superman, Batman, and other superheroes are. By comparing something everybody already knows (who the Superheroes are) with what they need to know (who Jesus is), this audiobook makes vitally important Christian truths understandable, applicable, and heartwarming to a wide audience.

Props for creativity

This is going to be a huge help in the way I am able to describe ancient heresies with my church. The creative element behind this has shifted this kind of scholarly work to become incredibly accessible.

The author does a wonderful job

The author does a wonderful job at writing and reading this book. he brings to light things about the person and deity of Jesus Christ through scripture. he also does a good job of actually describing a comic book character to the people who don't read comic books. I was recommended this book because I am an Avid Reader of DC and Marvel Comics and thoroughly enjoyed his comparison of the man Jesus the godhead and basising it all on scriptures and history of the church.

Real Jesus as Explained by Lover of Superheroes

This book was simply fantastic. Todd Miles gets an A plus for his great research, thorough explanations, and engaging style of writing. While this book introduces various superheroes, you by no means need to be a comic book lover to appreciate this book. Miles helpfully explains how various christological heresies got it wrong throughout history and why they continue to be popular misrepresentations of Jesus today. But he does this in a very unique and thought-provoking way.

If you love Marvel comic books and movies and you love Jesus, this is the perfect book for you!

Awesome!

I loved all the visuals that allow for a better understanding of categories we place ourselves in without really noticing. Definitely recommend this.

MARVEL-ous!

A good friend of mine referred me to this book and I absolutely loved it from beginning to end! So much Christian theology packed into the relatable subjects of comic book superheroes. I am a huge fan of anything Marvel and some of the DC stuff and the fallacies that are given are spot on. The author does a phenomenal job of narrating his book and is a must read for any avid Christ follower or one searching for answers as to who Christ is. I will definitely be re-listening to this one!

A perfect mix of fun and facts about Jesus

Everyone loves superheroes ... especially this day and age when it seems like we get new superhero movies multiple times a year. And Todd Miles does an excellent job of melding our culture's obsession with how we think about Jesus, for good or for ill. The heresies that Miles covers in this book about Jesus are far more prominent than most people realize, and they're worth addressing.

What you will get in this book--outside of the excellent narration by Miles himself--are things Miles has spent years studying as a longtime theology professor. But somehow, despite his vast knowledge and expertise, he presents it in an incredibly digestible and understandable way that non-seminarians can understand just as easily as seminarians can. This book is a great mix of fun, intellectual insight, church history, and practicality--the latter which is clearly shown in the great discussion guide and questions at the end of each chapter.

If you want to learn more about Jesus, and some of our most common misconceptions about Him, listen/read this book today. I highly recommend it.

The structure makes each heresy easy to understand.

The entire premise was fantastic! I’ll be taking our youth group through this book as it makes all the bad ideas about Jesus really easy to understand.
