Publisher's Summary

Based on his talks at New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral on Good Friday 2015, the New York Times best-selling author and editor at large of America magazine offers a portrait of Jesus, using his last words on the cross to reveal how deeply he understood our predicaments, what it means to be fully human, and why we can turn to Christ completely in mind, heart, and soul.

With the warmth, wisdom, and grace that infuse his works, Father James Martin explains why Jesus' crucifixion and death on the cross is an important teaching moment in the Gospels. Jesus' final statements, words that are deeply cherished by his followers, exemplify the depth of his suffering but also provide a key to his empathy and why we can connect with him so deeply.

Perfect lead in to Passion Week

Fr Martin does an excellent job in his written and spoken text to help guide us through meditating on Jesus's last words. This will become an annual listing during Lent.

James Martin and Jesus, what a winner

Fr Martin always does a superb job of opening up my thoughts to spiritual areas. His premise that the seven last words apply to Jesus' humanity and His understanding of ours makes for a great meditation. I listened to it several times during Lent

A Must Read or Reread during Holy Week

This short book puts Jesus passion and death into context. Fr Martin’s reflection on the ‘seven last words’ spoken by Jesus is easily understood. I have listened to this several times and find it a perfect book for Holy Week.

Brought to life Jesus’s passion and his death

I have read this narrative and heard this story countless times, however, listening to Father Martin read his account moved me beyond any Triduum and Easter experience I’ve encountered. I listened to its entirety on a long journey home, late on the Mass pike. It had such a profound impact on me mostly because Father Jim was able to coax experiences out of my own life and connect them to Jesus on the cross. I found myself responding out loud and feeling like I had developed an even more intimate relationship with Jesus.

Good listen

Jesuit Fr. James Martin is spot-on in these reflections on Jesus' seven last statements in the Gospels prior to his death on the cross. A very worthwhile listen.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to any person whether Christian or otherwise. It is a great insight into Jesus and his last moments on the cross.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

God bless Fr Jim

James Martin is one of the best Christian communicators of our age. He combines scholarship with experience, inspires and informs, and even reminds us that the US is not entirely populated by those who worship money and guns! (Ever since US declared itself the enemy of Western civilisation I do rejoice to know that decent Christian Catholics like Fr Jim, will remind me that even in Trump's USA, still defend the faith.
