What legacy of the sacraments does the 20th century give to the 21st? Franciscan Father Kenan Osborne reviews three phases of 20th century sacramental theology and practice and shows how these concepts can affect the third millennium.
We've come a long way since the Second Vatican Council, Fr. Osborne says. Today our approach to sacraments is existential, that is when we celebrate a rite, God is speaking to us personally in those moments.
He says, "As you experience God in that particular moment, you will say: That's what sacrament is all about."
This presentation was recorded before an audience at the 1998 Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, Calif.
I have listened to this once through and will listen again. The recording quality is poor, so it is very difficult to listen to at times. Anyone with hearing challenges might struggle more with this. The quality seemed to improve as the recording progressed. As for the material, I found it helpful in contemplating sacraments in the 21st Century.
