Publisher's summary

The doctrines of grace are often known as the five points of Calvinism, but they were not the invention of John Calvin or his reforming cohorts of the 16th century. Rather, they are biblical doctrines, as Dr. Steven J. Lawson demonstrated in his book Foundations of Grace (2006). Now, in Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson shows that the doctrines of grace have been understood and taught sometimes in embryonic form, sometimes with great clarity throughout Church history.

From the time of the early Church fathers to the years of the Reformers, there have been key men in the Church, pillars as it were, who stood on the foundation of scripture and upheld the truth of God's sovereign role in salvation. In Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson walks listeners through the ups and downs of Church history, profiling these voices for the truth. The inescapable conclusion is that the doctrines of grace are no innovation but the consistent witness of some of the greatest men of the Church.

Steven J. Lawson Knocks It Out Of The Park!

Would you consider the audio edition of Pillars of Grace to be better than the print version?

They are both very good- about the same, just easier and faster to get through by listening to the audio.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pillars of Grace?

There were many...Lawson talking about the Early Church Fathers including Augustine. Then, proceeding to the Reformation.

Which scene was your favorite?

Since this in non fiction, there was no "scene".... just the facts.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Seeking the Truth about Church History

Any additional comments?

Focus back on God and away from self.

An excellent modern handling of the doctrines of grace. Don't pass this one up, especially if you're wondering about this whole Calvinist controversy, which most people argue against without knowing anything about it. Really, your soul may be in danger if you don't understand these things.

A Great History of Sovereign Grace

Lawson uncovers a history that has been long obscured by those opposed to it!
It faithfully captures the continuity of the doctrines that would come to be called Calvinism from the Church Fathers to the Reformation. Long hidden it is now brought out into the light for all to hear and know. Excellent work. The reader was a little dry and monotone but read clearly. Highly recommended!

Great book on early church history.

If you ever looked at The Reformation and wondered if these men were the first hold these views, you will enjoy this book as it traces the beliefs and teachings of early church fathers through the early reformation. It should be required reading for every pastor and/or church leader who would want to weigh in on the debate over the doctrines of grace. I highly recommend this book!

Blessings,
Pastor Paul Trimble

Not what I thought ....better!

I thought this was going to be a book about the Doctrines of Grace. It was so much more! Seeing how men, who helped shape the way the Church is today, understood reformed theology even before it was called that was very enlightening.

Fantastic overview of church history!

Dr. Lawson did a wonderful job of researching church history and had the painstaking task of distilling it down for this series. So far he has done a fantastic job at tracing God's protection of His seed throughout the many generations and people groups. Well done, Mr. Lawson! I look forward to subsequent installments in this series!
The narration was also very well done. The pacing and tone made it feel like a natural conversational lecture.
