Publisher's summary

"There is no writer in the evangelical world that I admire and appreciate more." (Billy Graham)

Philip Yancey's words - captured in his many best-selling books - have influenced the lives of millions by strengthening their faith, building their hope, sparking their creativity, and challenging their comfort zones. If you're one of those millions, you know personally how his insights have affected your mind and heart. And if you're new to Yancey, you're in for a life-altering experience.

These meditations - all drawn from the beloved and best-selling writings of the author - will take you through an entire year of Yancey's insight and imagination, covering a broad range of topics:

  • How to rediscover God through the wonders of nature, music, and romantic love
  • Why grace means you can't do anything to make God love you more or less
  • What happens when you cut through preconceptions to encounter the "real" Jesus
  • How to renew your understanding and practice of prayer
  • Where you can see God in unexpected people and places
  • How to cope when life crashes in around you

Every day, experience the best from a beloved author who, with freshness, clarity, and energy, has so brilliantly articulated God’s wonderful but mysterious relationship with you.

Perhaps My Favorite Devotional

Would you listen to Grace Notes again? Why?

Yes, I would - and I plan to. :-)

What did you like best about this story?

I have used and reviewed many Christian daily devotionals (of which, there are painfully few available in audio format). This has become one of my two or three favorites. The narrator's voice, while at first not sounding ideal for the subject matter, quickly grew on me (and I now wouldn't exchange it even if I could).Yancy's variety of insights - from world travel to historical accounts to encounters with unique ministries to childhood impressions to literary reviews - are all deftly related to growth in your walk with Christ. While not quoting Scripture much (the only thing keeping it from being my unqualified favorite devotional) it is consistent with Biblical truth. If you listen to each day's devotional on your way to work or into your day, you will be very, very satisfied with this audio book.

What does Maurice England bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He grows on you quickly. I was not initially elated with his voice as narrator - yet still got the book because: 1) I'm a fan of Yancy's writing; and 2) There are surprisingly few Christian devotionals in audio book format. Within just a few days I grew familiar with Mr. England's distinct voice, and now feel that it is perfect for this devotional book. Well done, sir!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would enjoy that - if time ever presented itself in such generous portions - yet this is a daily devotional. In just three or four minutes a day, Yancy contributes an impressive amount of insight and unique perspective.

Any additional comments?

Get it! :-) This is one of the best credits I've even spent!

Kind of a disappointment with Yancey

I loved What's so amazing about Grace, and Disappointment with God, so I imagined I would love this too. Alas, this was not the case! This particular book does not translate well on audible, Folks get tired of constant admonitions, and Yancey really needs to get over his"traumatic roots."

Apparently, in print, this book is more like a devotional. Audible listeners tend to listen to the entire book. It's unnerving to read weeks of different entry's on a single sitting. This particular book does not translate well to audible.

Yancey constantly complains how he was preached at angrily as a child. I think he only was harmed by the legalism, not the admonitions, cause he does very little Reasoning, you know, Acknowledging that there are several good ideas out there, Yancey addresses nearly every entry with; "we need", or, "we have always", constant admonitions that tacitly states that only he knows what our positions should be on.... anything! In blogs, sermons, and books, folks get tired of constant admonitions.

A constant theme in these entry's, is the trauma that Yancey suffered by a legalistic, (his judgement), home church, and Bible college. I'm sure for Yancey, this pain is real, but it's not ours, nor is the damage comprehensive to the evangelical church as a whole. If Yancey really wants to be the next Lewis, he needs to filter out this constant prejudice.
