Publisher's summary

The pioneering author of The Way of the Shaman continues his exploration of universal shamanism in this “wonderful, fascinating” guide (Carlos Castaneda).

In 1980, Michael Harner blazed the trail for the worldwide revival of shamanism with his seminal classic, The Way of the Shaman. In this long-awaited sequel, he provides new evidence of the reality of heavens.

Drawing from a lifetime of personal shamanic experiences and more than 2,500 reports of Westerners’ experiences during shamanic ascension, Harner highlights the striking similarities between their discoveries, indicating that the heavens and spirits they’ve encountered do indeed exist. He also provides instructions on his innovative core-shamanism techniques, so that listeners, too, can ascend to heavenly realms, seek spirit teachers, and return later at will for additional healing and advice.

Written by the leading authority on shamanism, Cave and Cosmos is a must-have, not only for those interested in shamanism, but also for those interested in spirituality, comparative religion, near-death experiences, healing, consciousness, anthropology, and the nature of reality.

"Listen to drumming."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a bad book. It isn't. But if you're looking for specific techniques, which the description claims this book includes it really doesn't. The only advice I really took away from it was: "listen to drumming."

The drumming is helpful. I do find it relaxing while not too relaxing (no drumming is included in this audio, but mp3 files are available for cheap from the author's website). As far as specific, step by step instructions on what to do... you won't really find them here. You will hear lots of stories of others experiences as well as a lot of information about interpreting those experiences. That is what this book is really about and later toward the end, Mr. Harner explains that it is deliberate. He is not trying to make a religion full of rituals, he is trying to create an experiential guide. The problem with that is, his instructions really aren't very clear and you're basically left with a lot of other peoples stories despite his claim that isn't his intention. So objective failed. Sorry.

For that reason, I would recommend reading a few books on lucid dreaming and meditation. Otherwise I did enjoy this book. I loved it for what it was, but I feel the description was misleading. This is not a step by step guide on achieving a naturally induced altered state of consciousness for the purpose of spiritual journeying. It's a book about how to interpret those experiences when you do have them. Do read this. It is good. It just isn't what it is advertised as. Keeping this in mind I think you will go into it with the proper mindset. Good luck.

This could have saved me decades of searching!

I've studied Shamanism in many forms for over thirty years. I love the vernacular of core shamanism. For those that want to do the work. Many guidelines are presented that respect everyones background and will not interfere with personal process. Enjoy fellow travelers.

Lots of “fat calories” with few “protein calories"

Where’s the beef? Lots of “fat calories”, but almost no “protein calories”.

In this book, anthropologist & shaman Michael Harner, PhD recounts (in great gory detail) many persons’ modern-day “shamanic journeying” experiences (what I deem “fat calories”) in this sequel to his 1980 book “The Way of the Shaman” (ASIN 0062503731), which still provides LOTS of GOOD “protein calories”.

Instead of hearing about other persons’ “shamanic journeying” experiences (“fat calories”), I had expected more advanced teachings (“protein calories”) re “shamanic journeying”, beyond what is taught in “The Way of the Shaman”.

The “shamanic journeying” guidance provided in Appendices A-D of this book is minimal and doesn’t add much to what’s in “The Way of the Shaman”.

Consequently, even though this book is interesting, it didn’t really teach me much of anything new beyond what’s in “The Way of the Shaman”.

Consequently, I was greatly disappointed and cannot give this book more than 3 stars despite its entertainment value.

An important book

I loved this book. I've read many books on Shamanism/core Shamanism and this one is my favourite. Much gratitude and respect to the author and his wife for their amazing work.

Excellent!!

I’ve been practicing core shamanism for many years now. I was taught by Sandra Harner and Sandra Ingerman and others. Listening to this recording has re-inspired me that this is my best spiritual pathway. Amanda Foulger was an excellent narrator.
